This "charm offensive" by the Vatican ignores a record of human rights abuses in China, while manifesting an anti-American sentiment certainly shared by the Chinese Communist one-party state."

    Bishop Sanchez's comments are particularly disheartening in light of the severe new government regulations on churches that went into effect on February 1. An independent Catholic news source in Asia reports that authorities in some regions are banning children and young people from obtaining religious instruction or taking part in Christian church services.

Pope Francis efforts to reach an accommodation with the atheistic Chinese government may be motivated by a sincere desire to save the Church from further marginalization in China, but losing control  over the selection of bishops (and, by extension, priests) is a high price to pay. Reportedly, at least two of the seven excommunicated bishops selected by China have had relationships with women and have even fathered children. One wonders how faithful underground Chinese Catholics will receive bishops and priests who have been vetted by the anti-Christian government.

    Sandro Magister, who writes for Italy's L'Espresso, describes Pope Francis as a "man of extreme realism who calculates very much the effects of what he says or does." He adds that Pope Francis in order to achieve certain results is "quite ready to play down" concerns expressed by critics that he might otherwise show for "the persecuted and the oppressed." This realism of Pope Francis led Ukrainian Christians to complain that the Vatican has de-emphasized Russian aggression against their country in order to cultivate relations with the Russian Orthodox Church supported by the Kremlin. In 2016, Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill signed a harmonious joint declaration in Havana, Cuba. Ukrainian Catholics are wondering at what cost.

EROSION OF TRADITIONAL TEACHINGS:

While Pope Francis tries to open doors with the Chinese government, the Vatican appears to be closing doors for traditionalist within the church. Cardinal Raymond Burke and three other cardinals have been waiting in vain since September 2016 for a response to a private letter requesting clarification from Pope Francis on his suggestion in his apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia that the sacraments might be made available to divorced and civilly remarried Catholics who have not received and annulment.

    More recently, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, a German prelate and close advisor to Pope Francis, reportedly told the German media that "one must encourage priests" to give liturgical blessings to homosexual unions. His words echoed a similar statement By Bishop Franz-Bode, vice president of the German Bishops' Conference, who is on record as suggesting the possibility of blessing homosexual union, which he described as "positive and good."

    This is a strange new world that has been created by the Vatican. Communist China is portrayed as a conveyor of the social gospel, while the evil of human rights abuses in the country is ignored; faithful Chinese bishops are being pushed out in favor of Communist Chinese government-approved bishops; the door is open to communion for divorced and remarried Catholic who have not obtained annulments; and some bishops are apparently advocating liturgical blessings for homosexual unions. Pope Francis denounces those who want to stem the flood of immigrants into Europe as sinners, even as Western culture in Europe is being destroyed. Catholics worldwide are asking: What's next?

"The Church - as we have seen - is a reality that surpasses, mysteriously and infinitely, the sum of her members. In fact, in order to obtain Christ's forgiveness, my sin was set over against the faith of his Church.

Today this seems to have been forgotten by many theologians, priests, and laymen. Its is not only the change from the I to the We, from personal to collective responsibility. One gets the impression that some, although unconsciously may reverse the prayer by understanding it in this way: Look not upon the sins of the Church but upon my faith ..." Should this really happen, the consequences will be grave:

the faults of the individuals become the faults of the Church, and faith is reduced to a personal event, to my way of understanding and accepting God and his demands. I really fear that today this is a widespread manner of feeling and thinking. It is another sign of how greatly in many places the common Catholic consciousness has distanced itself from an authentic conception of the Church.

"We must go back to saying to the Lord: "We sin, but the Church that is yours and the bearer of faith does not sin." Faith is the answer of the Church to Christ. It is Church in the measure that it is an act of faith. This faith is not an individual, solitary act, a response of the individual. Faith means to believe together, with all the Church.

We must always bear in mind that the Church is not ours but his. Hence the "reform", the "renewals" - necessary as they may be - cannot exhaust themselves in a zealous activity on our part to erect new, sophisticated structures. The most that can come from a work of this kind is a Church that is "ours", to our measure, which might indeed to be interesting but which, by itself, nevertheless not the true Church, that which sustains us with faith and gives us life with the sacrament.

I mean to say that what we can do if infinitely inferior to one who does. Hence, true "reform" does not mean to take great pains to erect new facades (contrary to what certain ecclesiologies think).

Real "reform" is to strive to let what is ours disappear as much as possible so what belongs to Christ may become more visible. It is a truth well known to the saints. Saints, in fact, reformed the Church in depth, not by working up plans for new structures, but by reforming themselves. What the Church needs in order to respond to the needs of every age is holiness, not management.

Preface:

    The following are excerpts to help one understand, the political and religious influences in the Vatican to negotiate an agreement with Communists which they did:

"Dr. Chen suggests that Pope Francis's background as a Jesuit priest might also be playing a role. Jesuits arrived in China 400 years ago and established a presence on the mainland by conforming to local norms. Pope Francis's own background in Argentina, where he adjusted to a military junta notorious for its human rights violations, might be playing a role as well. Pope Francis perhaps believes that short-term accommodation with dictatorships can pay long-term dividends for the church.

 

There should be no doubt that Pope Francis sees his mission in Beijing and the world as historic. Long-time Vatican watcher George Weigel observes in National Review that there is little reason to trust the Chinese government on any accord. He asses the situation as grim. If China becomes more repressive, then "what reason is there to have any confidence that the Chinese-Communist regime would not tighten the screws on Catholics who challenge the state on human-rights grounds?" ...

If, on the other hand, conditions get better in a liberating China with the rising middle class, Weigel wonders why people would be interested in a Catholicism that "kowtowed" to the Communist regime.

 

Former bishop of Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kium has been closely following the year-and-a-half negotiations between Rome and Bejing. He met with Pope Francis on January 12 to personally deliver a letter from an underground bishop who has refused to resign. The letter came from 88-year-old Bishop Zhuang Jianjian, who was ordained with Vatican approval in 2006.

 

In December 2017, Bishop Zhuang was escorted by government officials ... to meet a papal delegation who asked Bishop Zhuang to step aside in favor of Huang Bingzhang, an excommunicated bishop and member of the National People's Congress. Huang had been excommunicated for accepting a government appointment as bishop against Vatican wishes. Shortly afterwards, the Vatican envoys traveled to Fujian Providence to ask another underground bishop to step down to step down to serve as assistant to another government-appointed bishop, Zhan Silu, whose consecration the Vatican had earlier declared illegal.

 

Cardinal Zen reported on his meeting with pope Francis in an open letter on Facebook on January 29, He stated that the pontiff expressed sympathy with the underground church and said he instructed the Vatican negotiators "not to create another Mindszenty case." It is not entirely clear what Pope Francis intended by this remark....(Pope Paul VI, desiring to conciliate the Hungarian communist government, removed  Mindszenty's titles as archbishop a Primate of Hungary in 1973 after Mindszenty refused to resign. A hero to anti-communists all over the world, Mindszenty believed that there should be no compromise with an evil totalitarian regime.

 

CHINESE CATHOLICS IN A 'CAGE'?

Cardinal Zen has become less sanguine about where the negotiations with China are headed. He has declared publicly that allowing the Chinese government to appoint bishops will place the Chinese Catholics in an "iron cage." The Rev. Bernardo Cervellera, the editor of AsiaNews.it, was even more direct in his criticism of where the negotiations seem to be heading. He warned that the Vatican negotiators appeared to be giving "carte blanche, and accept all requests and pose no opposition on questions that affect the church in China."

 

The Vatican's apparent eagerness for a rapprochement with mainland China is evident in public statements by church officials in Rome praising China as a conduit for social justice. Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, described China in a recent interview with the Spanish-language edition of the Vatican Insider  as the country "best implementing the social doctrine of the Church." He asserted that in China " you do not have shantytowns, you do not have drugs, young people do not take drugs." (Obviously he has never been to a Bejing or Shanghai nightclub.)... George H. " A Catholic priest has made the case that the "homosexualization of the Catholic priesthood" is at the heart of the "malaise" that has enveloped Western civilization.

 

In his lecture "Sacrificate sacrificium iustitiae: The Transformation Wrought by the Cross of Christ," Fr. Kevin O'reilly, O.P. , a professor of moral theology at the Angelicum University in Rome, argued earlier this month at Rome Life Forum that the undervaluing of the nuptial symbolism of the priesthood, with its dimension of sacrifice for the Bride of Christ, is not just part of the culture of death, but at its heart.

 

"The homsexualization of the priesthood has probably contributed to the advance of the culture of death in the Western world. Much attention has been afforded to the various phenomena of the culture of death, including homosexual relationships and gender ideology, as well as to their impact on heterosexual marriage and family. Many of those involved in waging battle against these phenomena have been priests and their efforts have been both well-directed and necessary," he wrote.

 

"The time has come to point out that the homosexualization of the priesthood ha not only been a part of the wider problem but also arguably been at the heart of the malaise that has enveloped Western civilization."

 

O'Reilly argued that a life of loving sacrifice for others is the fulfillment in the order of grace of the natural law. He holds that the natural inclinations of the human person - to self-preservation, to the procreation and education of offspring, and to the good in accord with the nature of reason - which furnish the basic precepts of the natural law are sacrificial in nature when rightly ordered. These inclinations are brought to their supreme fulfillment by Christ in His sacrifice on the Cross for His spouse, the Church.

 

Whereas the ordination of homosexual priests is valid, O'Reilly acknowledges, "the fact that they do not experience a natural attraction to members of the opposite sex cannot but obscure the symbolism intrinsic to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Christ, the Bridegroom, offers his whole being in sacrifice for his Spouse, the Church."

 

O'Reilly believes that the rise of homosexuality in the priesthood is tied to the loss of emphasis on the mortification of the flesh and on self-sacrifice, leading to a sacrifice of the laity, who "have been sacrificed on the altar of clerical narcissism, particularly insofar as their right to be formed according to the Church's faith and moral teaching is concerned."

"I (Bishop Thomas John Paprocki) condemn the gravely immoral action of the Illinois House of Representatives in passing Senate Bill 25, labeled with a highly misleading title as the 'Reproductive Health Act, ' purporting to declare abortion a fundamental right," he wrote.

The bishop released a subsequent press release, dated June 6, justifying his decision:

"The Eucharist is the most sacred aspect of our Catholic faith. As sacred Scripture warns, "Whoever eats unworthily of the bread and drinks from the Lord's cup makes himself guilty of profaning the body and of the blood of the Lord."  To support legislation that treats babies in the womb like property, allowing for their destruction for any reason at any time, is evil. It is my hope and prayer these lawmakers reconcile themselves to the Church so they can receive Communion."

Paprocki, himself a canon lawyer, consulted with other canon lawyers throughout North America before issuing his decree, according to the June 6 press release.

"According to Thomas More Society Society, the new Illinois Reproductive Health Act will allow abortions for any reason throughout all nine months of pregnancy; eliminate restrictions regarding where abortions may be performed; allow non-physicians to perform abortions; undermine and threaten institutional and individual rights of conscience; jeopardize any meaningful regulation of abortion facilities; require private health insurance policies to include coverage for all abortions, with no exemptions, even for churches and other religious organizations; eliminate any requirement to investigate fetal deaths or maternal deaths resulting from abortion; repeal a law prohibiting "kickbacks" for abortion referrals; repeal the 'Parental Notice Of Abortion Act of 1995, which has been responsible for a more than 55-percent reduction in abortions among Illinois minors since 2012; and force parents to pay for their minor children's abortions.

"In accord with canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law - ... Illinois Senate President John Cullerton and Speaker of the House Michael J. Madigan, who facilitated the passage of the Act Concerning Abortion of 2017 (house Bill 40) as well as the Reproductive Health Act of 2019 (Senate Bill 25), are not to be admitted to Holy Communion in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois because they have obstinately persisted in promoting the abominable crime and very grave sin of abortion as evidenced by the influence they exerted in their leadership roles and their repeated votes and obdurate public support for abortion rights over an extended period of time," Paprocki wrote in a statement dated June 2, 2019.

"These persons may be readmitted to Holy Communion only after they have truly repented these grave sins and furthermore have made suitable reparation for damages and scandal, or at least have seriously promised to do so, as determined in my judgment or in the judgment of their diocesan bishop in consultation with me or my successor," he continued.

Although they are not named, Paprocki included other pro-abortion state politicians in his interdict, saying, "I declare that Catholic legislators of the Illinois General Assembly who have cooperated in evil and committed grave sin by voting for any legislation that promotes abortion are not to present themselves to receive Holy Communion without first being reconciled to Christ and the Church in accord with canon 916 of the Code of Canon Law."

Last Friday, the Illinois legislature sent Senate Bill 25, known as the Reproductive Health Act, to the governor for approval. Blatantly pro-abortion, Senate Bill 25 seeks to protect the "fundamental rights of individuals to make autonomous decisions about one own reproductive health." It passed in the Senate by a 34-20 vote. Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker has vowed to sign the bill, which asserts that the "fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent rights." The new law will go into effect immediately upon signature...."

P.S. At 23,  I remember traveling to Europe in 1954 from Montreal to Antwerp by freighter Hugo Stinnes. It took ten days. With a back-pack on my back, I visited Europe via train and youth hostels (25 cents) from July to October. The Canadian and American dollar went very far. 

    There was some understandable jealousy for the American tourists. And then if it wasn't for America, they would be speaking German or Russian. I did not like the sign when I entered Vienna. It read Vienna will take care of you in German.  No, I did not want any city or government taking care of me.      In Laudato Si', Pope Francis makes admiring mention of the Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Darwinist who was disgraced by his association with Piltdown Man, an "early human discovery" that was turned out to be a hoax. The writings of Teilhard were repeatedly censured by the Church. But Francis cites him as an empeccably orthodox source, writing in Laudate Si'  of his "contribution" to the Church's understanding of creation.".... Pope Francis lifted the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith's sanction on a scholar, Ariel Alvarez Valdes, who denies the historicity of Adam and Eve....

When other popes sought to save souls, he prefers the most fashionable cause of "saving the planet."

Excerpts:  "The Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong has spoken out forcefully against the Vatican's newest "pastoral document" for the Chinese Church which gives reasons for why priests should register with communist government. Cardinal Joseph Zen presented nine criticisms to Pope Francis and Cardinal Pietro Parolin on a recent trip to Rome, July 1, that outline his concern about the document.

'A text signed against the faith and it is stated that the intention is to promote the good of the community, a more suitable evangelisation, and the responsible management of Church assets. This general rule is obviously against all fundamental [al] moral theology! If valid, [it] would justify even apostasy!" stated the Cardinal in his criticism which were published on his website today.

   

 "This document has radically turned upside down what is normal and what is abnormal, what is rightful and what is pitiable. Those who wrote it hope perhaps that the pitied minority will die of a natural death.By this minority I mean not only underground priests, but also the many brothers in the official community who have worked with great tenacity to achieve change, hoping for the support of the Holy See," he stated later in his criticism of the pastoral document.

Cardinal Zen had been deeply involved in the recent protest that opposed the Chinese State imposition of extradition laws in Hong Kong.  Many believe these laws would continue the methodical takeover of the former British colony, now acting as an independent "Special Administrative Region".

His absence, however, was noted in the recent protests. In his statement, issued this morning, His Eminence explained what caused him to remain silent until this week.

"On the evening of June 28, I received notice (that) the Holy See (had issued the newest pastoral document for the Church in China). As a bishop and cardinal, I cannot accept this quietly. I must raise my doubts. It was (for this purpose) that I boarded a plane to Rome on the evening of the 29th."

   He continues: "At noon on Sunday (June 30th), I handed a letter to the Pope, to the security guard at Santa Marta dormitory (the Papal Residence) asking the Pope to let me (and the author of the statement) discuss the (document) in front of him. As I had not received a response by 4 pm on Monday, (July 1) I wrote another letter to the private secretary of the Pope, where I also attached mu 'dubia'. The secretary confirmed that my initial letter to the Pope had been received."

Cardinal Zen finally received a response from the office of the Secretary of State, the evening of Tuesday, July 2. His Eminence was told by an official that "the Pope said my question could be discussed with the Secretary of State. I said, "Then it is (lost). I have absolutely no confidence that meeting him (Cardinal Parolin) will have any impact."

   Wednesday evening, however, Cardinal Zen received an invitation by Pope Francis, to have dinner with him and with Cardinal Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State.

He writes: "It is impossible to argue at dinner. We spoke (only) about the situation in Hong Kong. As for the pastoral document and my statement, I (only) mentioned it to the Pope in the last few minutes.

The Pope said several times, 'I will pay attention to this matter.' This is the only sentence I (have) brought back to my people. I also handed my 'dubia' to the Secretary of State, who did not say anything at the dinner."  ...  G.H.K.

    It is a breadth of fresh air to read daily if possible the Wall Street Journal. It is one of the few papers in the U.S.A. where honest journalism is not dead. Write on journalist William McGurn.

     "In the classic 1942 film "Yankee Doodle Dandy," an autograph seeker asks song-and-dance man George M. Cohen the secret of his success. "Oh," he responds, "I'm an ordinary guy who knows what ordinary guys like to see."

 

     You could say the same for Donald Trump. Whether it's a parade featuring tanks and military aircraft, bright red "Make America Great Again" hats or fast food at the White House to celebrate college football champs, the President has a knack appealing to ordinary guys. His unembarrassed, over-the-top patriotic displays gives him something in common with Cohan, whose statue still stands over Broadway.

      With this difference: When Trump gives the ordinary guy what he likes, his critics come unglued. Though the president himself offers some prime targets, rather than limit their attacks to these, so often his political foes end up attacking things ordinary people like simply because Mr. Trump likes them too.

    
This dynamic was on display at Washington' July 4 parade as much as the B-2 stealth bomber that soared above. Maybe you have to be a Harvard Law professor to see U.S. Army tanks in the nation's capitol as a "chilling" reminder of Tiananmen Square, as Laurence Tribe tweeted. Or a New York Times editor to believe that the week of July 4 is the perfect time to drop a video op-ed under the title, "Please Stop Telling Me America Is Great."

     It's no surprise when celebrities like Bette Midler and Rob Reiner issue silly statements. But it's it's amazing to see the same from Democratic presidential candidates, whose success come November 2020 will depend on winning back some of those who voted twice for Barack Obama but went for Mr. Trump in 2016.

  
  Now Democrats have even made Betsy Ross an issue. Right before the Fourth, Nike pulled a new line of sneakers featuring the Ross flag after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a Nike brand ambassador, told the company he thought it offensive and connected to an era of slavery. In reaction, presidential aspirant Julian Castro said he was "glad" Nike pulled the sneaker, and went on to liken the original stars and stripes to the confederate battle flag....

     One wonders how may Democrats will be grateful for the conversation if, during the debate, a moderator asks for a show of hands for all those who finds Betsy Ross's flag offensive. Meanwhile, other Democrats accused the president of politicizing the parade and making it all about himself - when they were the ones who made the parade all about Mr. Trump and politics.

    
Even Joe Biden who prides himself on his ordinary guy credentials, used his own July 4 speech in Iowa to denounce the Washington parade as "an event designed more to stroke [President Trump's] ego than celebrate American ideals. Imagine how much stronger Mr. Biden would be today if he had opted for a grace not. Something along the line of, "July 4 isn't a day for politics. I wish everyone in Washington a wonderful Independence Day parade, and God bless our men and women in uniform."         This is the Achilles' heel of today's American Liberalism - the barely disguised sense of superiority not only toward the President but toward any who support him. Hillary Clinton gave voice to this disdain when she dismissed half of Mr. Trump's supporters as not only "deplorable" but "irredeemable" as well.

  
  It is the same sentiment that presumed a group of high school boys from Covington, Ky., racist simply because they were wearing MAGA hats. And because the American people are benefiting from a booming economy, for some it also means rooting for a recession even if it hurts people, as comedian Bill Maher has said.

    Since those first Democratic debates June 26-27, much of the focus has been on policy proposals such as eliminating private insurance or extending Medicare to all those who are in the U.S. Illegally. Some wisely question whether this agenda will excite voters in the battleground states Democrats need if the party is to retake the White House....       George H. Kubeck

5. Always to God and say, in every circumstance, "Thy will be done." (continued) ..."As we have seen, he recommended prayer for the departed. When Pope Pius X died, Padre Pio said, "I believe that his holy soul has no need of our intercessory prayer, but let us pray for his eternal rest just the same, since our prayers will never go to waste....

6. "Love the cross." Padre Pio consistently taught that suffering is special sign of God's love. "Without love for the cross, he wrote, "we cannot make much profit in the Christian life. "He frequently reminded his disciples, "The heavenly Father wants to make you resemble His divine Son in His anguish in the desert and on Calvary."

Why must Christians suffer? Why do bad things happen to them? "Religion," he wrote, "is a hospital for spiritual sick people who want to be healed. To be healed they must submit themselves to suffering, namely, to bloodletting, to the lance, to the razor, to the probe, to the scapel,  to the fire, and to all the bitterness of medicine. In order to  be spiritually cured, we have to submit to all the tortures of the Divine Physician....

7. Offer every action up to God.Padre Pio urged his disciples to make short mental prayers, offering everything they did, no matter how trivial, to Christ. "Let's refer everything to God and live and move in Him," he wrote. Along with everything else, the Christian was to offer his sufferings to God as a sacrifice. While Padre Pio did urge everyone to offer himself as a victim soul, he did teach that everyone should offer sufferings, when it come, to God, to be used for his good purposes. "Physical and spiritual ills are the most worthy offering you can make to Him, who saved you by suffering," he wrote to Nina Campanile. 

8. Never Worry. Anxieties, Padre Pio, taught, are a waste of time. The devil uses worry to befoul our good works because of our lack of confidence in God's goodness. "Our sweet Lord is deprived of giving us many graces, solely because the door of our heart is not open to Him in holy confidence," he insisted. Worry, he contended, "dries up Christian piety and makes it sterile."

9. Aspire to the heavenly prize. "How lovable an eternity in heaven is, and how miserable the affairs of this world!" Padre Pio exclaimed to a spiritual daughter. "Continually aspire to the former and fervently despise the comforts and affairs of this mortality."

Padre Pio had many things to say about heaven. There the child of God is forever happy, united with loved ones, watching over family and friends on earth. When the father of his spiritual daughters Erminia and Maria Gargani died, he wrote them, "Comfort yourself with the sweet thought that your Daddy is not dead .... He lives a life of joy that will have no end. He lives in Heaven....

10. Rejoice in the Lord.  Despite his sufferings as a victim of divine love, Padre Pio was a cheerful man. Nearly everyone who knew him found him basically happy, even jovial. "Drive melancholy away,"he wrote Raffaelina "Joy, with peace, is the sister charity .... Serve the Lord with laughter," he frequently said....

Padre Pio discouraged, however, too great a curiosity in the miraculous and extraordinary. Whenever people asked him about visions or alleged miraculous events, he said, "That is for the ecclesiastical authorities." He once told a friar, "I'm convinced that so many people don't want to live by faith, but seek the extraordinary." ... "Live by faith!" ...

To those, who like his sister Pellegrina, seemed hopelessly obdurate, he nonetheless showed love and patience. When a man confided to him, "I don't believe in God," Pio smiled and said, "But God believes in you! ....

"Cardinal Walter Brandmuller, one of the two remaining dubia cardinals, today issued a strong critique of the Vatican's working document (Instrumentum Laboris) for the upcoming Pan-Amazon Synod, calling it "heretical" and "apostasy" from Divine Revelation. He called upon Church leaders to "reject" it with "all decisiveness."

"It is to be stated now in decisive points that the Instrumenturn Laboris contradicts the binding teaching of the Church in decisive points and thus has to be qualified as heretical," the 90-year-old German prelate wrote in a document (read below) that was published simultaneously by LifeSiteNews and Austrian news website Kath,net.

"Inasmuch as even the fact of Divine Revelation is here being questioned, or misunderstood, one also now has to speak, additionally, of apostasy," Cardinal Brandmuller, who is a world renowned-scholar

of church history, stated.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (2089) defines "heresy" as: "The obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must believed with divine and Catholic faith, or it is like-wise and obstinate doubt concerning the same." The same paragraph (20289) goes on to define "apostasy" as:"The total repudiation of the Christian faith."....

The Cardinal takes issue with the working document's "very positive assessment of natural religions, including indigenous healing practices and the like, even mythical-religious practices and forms of cults," adding that the very "notion of inculturation is perverted in the document." The Cardinal then goes on to criticize the working document for pushing the "abolishment of celibacy" and introducing a path to "female priesthood." ....

The Cardinal said that the focus of having a synod in a region with a relatively small population, which is half the size of Mexico City, is "cause for suspicion concerning the true intentions" behind the meeting of the bishops.... In conclusion, Brandmuller stated that "we are witnessing a new form of the classical Modernism of the early 20th century" in this document, which is linked with a false understanding of the development of dogma, which "is sharply opposed to the genuine Catholic understanding." ....

B. Cdl. Burke: 'Synodality' Suggests Some Kind Of 'New Church' Where Pope's Authority Is Destroyed.

"Cardinal Raymond Burke has come out criticizing the concept of "synodality" that was barely discussed during the recently concluded "Youth Synod," but, nevertheless, found its way into the final document, surprising many of the Synod Fathers.

"On retiring, Pio advised  "Never lie down to sleep without having first examined  your conscience on the way you have spent the day and without first turning your conscience to God. Then offer and consecrate your whole person and that of every Christian ... to God." He added, "Offer, moreover, to the glory of His Divine Majesty the rest you are to take and never forget your Guardian Angel, who is always close to you, no matter how badly you treat him." ....

"Trying to explain Pio's indulgence with new disciples, Campanile wrote, "He won souls ... by first showing compassion and catering to their wishes so that they might not fail into sin. He felt that people deeply attached to material things cannot suddenly be divorced from them without the danger of falling into deep despair or losing interest in spiritual commitment. He had an earthy way of expressing this predicament, an antiseptic translation of which is: "Outside the sewer the cockroach dies."

Padre Pio's advice to his spiritual children can be summed up in ten points, all of which apply daily:

1. Put your trust in Christ as your personal Savior. Padre Pio often counseled his disciples to abandon themselves to Jesus. "like a child to his mother's arms." He urged them to pray to Christ: "Whom have  on earth beside Thee? Whom have I in heaven but Thee, my Jesus! Thou are the God of my heart and my inheritance, whom I desire eternally!"

2. Know that you have no righteousness of your own.... He gave Gargani the following rules: +Never be pleased with yourself. +Do not complain about offenses perpetuated against you. +Forgive everyone with Christian charity. +Always groan as a poor wretch before your God. +Never marvel at your weakness, but recognize yourself for what you are; blush over your inconstancy and faithfulness to God, and confide in Him, tranquilly abandoning yourself to the arms  of the Heavenly Father like a babe in arms of his mother. + Never exult in any way, in any virtues, but ascribe everything to God, and give Him all the glory and honor.... He  reminded his spiritual children. "The Scripture saw that we of ourselves cannot say the name of Jesus if it under the action of the Holy Spirit."...He told Raffaelina, "If the Lord were to judge us according to strict justice, none of us, perhaps, would be saved."

3. Remember that good works come only through Christ. Good works, Padre Pio taught, are produced only in union with Christ. He told Maria Gargani that all of our actions are mixed with inclinations toward pride, vanity, self-love, and similar sins. But if our motives are God-centered and our actions consecrated to God, they are accepted and used for his glory. To the Ventralla sisters he wrote that a Christian should not worry about what he does so long as it is done with a desire to please God.

4. Recognize that the devil is a real individual.... He once told a group of his disciples that the number of devils active in the world was greater than that of all the human beings who had lived since Adam.... "Your adversary, the devil, like a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking someone to devour. Resist him strongly in the faith."

5. Always pray to God and say, in every circumstance, "Thy will be done." ... "In all human affairs ... learn most of all to recognize and adore God's will in everything. Frequently repeat the divine words of our dear Master, 'Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.'... May this beautiful exclamation always be in your heart and on your lips in all vicissitudes... Repeat it in temptations and in the trials in which will be pleased to subject you.... This will be your anchor and salvation." ... Padre Pio had an intense belief that prayer changes things, even to the extent that, from a human point of view, God seems to change his mind as a result of prayer...

In no way, however, did he feel that men could manipulate God or obtain anything they wanted. A good example of this would be the case of his sister, Pellegrina, for whom no amount of prayer or suffering to avail to effect her conversion. Yet, as he once told a spiritual son, some things are decreed from eternity, but other things depend on the prayers of men and women."...

    On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress entered the final stage of its debate: should the Thirteen Colonies separate themselves from Great Britain? Speaking with quiet power, John Adams declared:

 

"Before God, I believe the hour has come. My judgment approves this measure, and my whole heart is in it. All that I have, and all that I am, and all that I hope in this life. I am now ready here to stake upon it. And I leave as I began, that live or die, survive or perish, I am for the Declaration. It is my living sentiment, and by the blessing of God it shall be my dying sentiment. Independence now, and Independence for ever!"

 

July 2nd:

    On this day in 1776, the Thirteen Colonies voted to separate from Great Britain. A hush fell over the room. The late afternoon sun fired a brass candlestick on the green felt tablecloth, a pair of spectacles, the silver knob of a walking stick. Men gazed out the window, some with tears in their eyes. A few prayed. Their chairman, John Hancock, broke the silence: Gentlemen, the price on my head has just doubled!"

 

    Referring to that vote a month later, Samuel Adams declared: "We have this day restored the Sovereign, to Whom alone men ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven and ... from the rising  to the setting sun, may His Kingdom come!"

 

July 3rd:

    When Independence became a reality, John Adams, who had fought so long and hard for his vision of a new nation under God, was overwhelmed. As always, the person with whom he most wanted to share feelings was his wife Abigail. On this day in 1770, with the first post rider leaving for Massachusetts, he dispatched a prophetic letter. The day, he said.

 

    "ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, shows, games, sports, guns, bells,bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the others, from this time forward forevermore."

 

July 4th: 

    On this day John Hancock, the Chairman of the Continental Congress, and the Secretary of the Congress both signed the Declaration of Independence of the United States, thereby making it legal. The only government document in world history that is a creeded statement of Bible-based ideals. It contains these phrases:

 

"We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

 

"Appealing to the Supreme judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions..."

 

"With a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence...."

Daniel Davis: So where does this, I mean, when did this really start on university campuses? Surely it started somewhere at a certain time? Does it stem back to the '60s, '70s' or is this more mind of a new rehashed racism or identity politics?

Heather MacDonald:

    Well, there's several strands of it. In the '60s, we had the start of racial preferences, which are an extraordinarily destructive policy that don't do their alleged beneficiaries any good. But the '70s was a sort of hiatus moment. Multiculturalism hadn't hit yet. I went to college in the '70s, and I view myself as incredibly fortunate in that I was allowed to read Chaucer, Milton, Spenser, and Wordsworth without anybody bitching and moaning about the gonads and melanin of those extraordinary gifted, sublime authors.

    I unfortunately wasted my time studying this very arcane, misguided literary theory call deconstruction, but at least I got to read the greatest books without a chip on my shoulder and without anybody apologizing.

    The '80s came.  You had Jesse Jackson at Stanford University leading the student know-nothings, trying to dismantle Stanford' Western civ requirement with the "Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Western Civ has got to go." Feminism took over, identity politics took over, and the curriculum has never been the same. ...

    Today, deconstruction has morphed into something I would say is more pernicious, which is that you look for ... in Shakespeare, you're looking for signs of racism and sexism. You're looking for the proto-sins that allegedly created a world of oppression. You are not allowed to lose in beauty. Pastoral poetry is an escape into an imaginary world of the beauties of nature and a retreat from oppression of civilization. These days, you're only going to be looking for so-called gender stereotypes.  ....

    This is something that the scientific method to its enormous credit has liberated us, has conquered want and poverty through trying to overcome those blind spots. But there's an additional to this now, that it's not just a human failing. The contempt for reason, the inability to follow reason is now, as they say in high theory, being theorized. It's being affirmatively justified.

    Reason and the Enlightenment are being trashed within the academy as themselves sources of oppression. I was the subject of one these shout-down protests at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Southern California, because I was there to speak about policing and to push back against the Black Lives Matter narrative.... Somehow they're claiming that the pursuit of truth is a way of oppressing minorities, that Enlightenment values are just a way to keep minorities down, The historical ignorance behind this is extraordinary."
