    "The world situation deeply saddened the old man. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy, in November 1963, depressed him. His love and admiration for Americans had been extended to their Presidents. He had loved Franklin Roosevelt, and years before, when an American bad-mouthed the man in the White House, Pio had said, "Don't talk that way! Roosevelt is a great man! If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be coming out of this thing [World War II]." He expressed high regard for Truman ...

   

    The rampant materialism and immorality that Pio saw all about him drove Pio nearly to despair. He increasingly warned that television was destroying family life... He became increasingly negative about movies, insisting that "the devil is in the cinema." ... Padre Pio seemed to see a vision of the future that filled him with horror...

    What perhaps troubled the Capuchin the most were the changes within his own Church. He accepted humbly the directives of Vatican II. Like many elderly priests, he requested and received permission to continue to celebrate the old Tridentine Latin Mass because he feared that he could never learn and remember the new Mass,,,

 

    What saddened him immeasurably was the attitude of dissent and unbelief that seemed to pervade the Church. He was almost embittered by the protests and criticism leveled at the pope and at the Church by radical priests, nuns, and laity.  He was distressed at the decline in vocations, especially in the Capuchin order... Measurements -- "Mine? Do you want to make me another habit?" "No, I have to take measurements for trousers.One never knows... the Special General Chapter is in session. Maybe, they will order us to wear civilian dress... The humor was lost on the old man, who started to weep bitterly."Have you lost your senses?" he cried. "I have lived and will die with this blessed habit on..."

 

    As Padre Pio weakened physically, hell seemed to renew its physical attacks on him. The diabolical apparitions and assaults seemed to have ceased...From the mid-1960s, however, diabolical attacks seemed to have returned in full force. Padre Pio's eyes were now grown too dim to permit him to read much anymore.... Evenings he spend sitting in his arm chair, praying the rosary...

 

    He said, "Stay with me! The devils won't leave me alone for one minute!"So I stayed in his room all night... It would be easy to assume that the old man, weak and confused and over medicated was losing his marbles. Yet every one assigned to watch him was convinced that Padre Pio, despite his age was completely rational ... the victim of physical demonic assaults...

    As Padre Eusebio went to ring a doctor, Padre Carmelo asked Padre Pio who had placed the pillow under his head. Weakly, Pio replied, "The Madonna." Early the next morning, July 6, the raving girl was in the square among the crowd waiting for the church door to open to admit them to Padre Pio's Mass. She screamed,"Last night I really hit that old man. You'll see if he come down to Mass." Nobody paid attention to her, but when the hour for Mass arrived and Padre Carmelo appeared to announce that Padre Pio was indisposed, the woman raged, "Did you hear? The old man will not come down to say Mass! I beat him up last night!" There's no way the girl could have gained entrance to Pio's room...

 

    Maria Pyle, who was not present but repeated what she had heard, insisted that the possessed woman had shrieked, "Pio, I have known you since your were small!"and that, when the exorcism was begun and when the priests asked the demon in the woman, "Where were you last night?" they were told, "I was upstairs to see the old man I hate so much because he is a source of faith. "Joe Biden's Leap of Faith"

 

    "By now Joe Biden's rosary must be the most famous beads in the world. "The cradle Catholic who carries a rosary wherever he goes," reports Jesuit Magazine America. "Biden almost has rosary beads in his pocket," says the Washington Post. Even Rolling Stones piously chimes in presenting the the former Vice-President as a practicing Catholic "wears his late son Beau's rosary on his wrist."

    It all feeds Mr. Biden's image as the scrappy Irish Catholic kid from Scranton, Pa. Today it is an image that also serves a crucial political purpose to soothe voters that might be troubled by a man who presents himself  as an ordinary Catholic even as he advocates for abortion on demand, with no restrictions and paid for by taxpayer dollars where necessary.

 

But in this election there's a new religious wrinkle, much more consequential than the ... debate over whether Mr. Biden is or isn't a good Catholic. For the issue today is no longer whether progressive dogmas from abortion and marriage equality to gender identity will prevail. Most already have.

    The question is now whether those who dissent from the new orthodoxy will be admitted to live their lives and run their institutions in accordance with their beliefs. Let's start with nuns. A campaign ad released features Mr. Biden happily chatting with Catholic nuns on St. Peter's Square. These "lovely women he says having always inspired him because they are all about being their brother's keeper.  He even chose a nun to offer the convention's opening prayer the night he accepted the nomination for president....

 

     The sisters (Little Sisters of the Poor) have since won at the Supreme Court. Mr. Biden's response? Restore the mandate with the fake exemption the Little Sister's objected to in the first place. This is how "lovely women" who live out a vocation of tending to the least among us can expect to be treated under the a Biden presidency.

    Now unlike, say, his running mate Kamala Harris, you won't catch Mr. Biden talking about the Knights of Columbus as though it were a hate group whose members are unfit for federal judge-ships. It's not his nature. Nevertheless a Biden-Harris administration would mean a federal bureaucracy less interested in accommodating religious Americans and their institutions than in constricting them. Democrats say so in their platform, in which they "reject" the "broad religious exemptions" that "allow businesses, medical providers, social service agencies and others to discriminate." In other words, religious liberty.

 

    This is the sleeper threat. It's already playing out in everything from licensing requirements (the Supreme Court is now deciding whether Catholic agencies that don't place children with gay couples can offer foster care) and tax exemptions (Orthodox Jewish Schools fear losing their status for adhering to biblical definitions of marriage) to conscience protections (a nurse  in Vermont was forced to participate in arranging an abortion against her will).

    Mormons meanwhile wonder if the Equity Act, which is meant to protect LGBTQ Americans and is strongly backed by Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris, would make Brigham Young University students ineligible for federal research dollars...

 

    All these things will come in the name of "reproductive health,""equity," "Inclusion" and "nondiscrimination." And a Biden administration would push them. How do we know? ... It's hard to find a single religious-rights case where the Democrats took the religious side. He rattles off the list...

 

    President Trump was mocked when he said Mr. Biden would "hurt God and hurt the Bible." But however inartful the words, today's Democratic Party is willing to use the full force of the federal bureaucracy to bring religious institutions to heel - no matter how genuinely Joe Biden may love his rosary beads.

 

"Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have this; upside down," says Bill Mumma, CEO and chairman of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. "The constitution protects religion from government interference. But in their views, any government objective, no matter how controversial, takes priority over religious belief."

2.) BORE THE WITH THE WOUNDS OF OUR LORD:

 

    On September 23, the Church celebrates the feast of an Italian Capuchin priest who gave us a living testimony to Christ's Passion St. Pio of Pietrelcina.

 

    Padre Pio, one of the most beloved 20th Century saints, bore the wounds of Christ, known as the stigmata, on his hands, feet, and side for 50 years. His wounds bled continuously and sometimes had the scent of roses. With his stigmata serving as a visible reminder of the sufferings of Jesus. St. Pio taught countless people about the self-giving love of Our Lord.

 

    In addition to the miracle of the stigmata, St. Pio could read hearts in the confessional, as well as bi locate, which means that he was occasionally present in two places at once. These miracles are well-documented, often from people who were initially trying to discredit him, but then came to realize that he was genuine.

 

    Padre Pio's great physical,emotional, spiritual suffering always pointed him toward Jesus. St. Pio once said, "The Christian's motto is the cross. You will recognize God's love by this sign, by the sufferings He sends you."

 

    His union with Christ also made him very devoted to the Mother of Our Lord. With a rosary always in hand, St. Pio encouraged people to seek our the Blessed Mother. He said, "Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today."

 

    The love that Padre Pio has for our Lord and the Blessed Mother was especially evident on the day of his death, as he kept repeating, "Gesu, Maria" (Jesus, Mary). At one point, he said, "I see two mothers," which that he saw both his earthly mother and Mary. And then with his final breath before dying, he whispered, "Maria!"

 

    In his life, he lived for Jesus and Mary and witnessed to their love. In his death, he did the same. And may we follow in his footsteps by having the names of Jesus and Mary ever on our lips and in our hearts.

"On January 9, 2026, Cardinal Zen, today Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, voiced severe criticism of the Vatican policy towards China which has evolved during the pontificate of Pope Francis. The Vatican reporter, Sandro Magister sums up the situation in these terms:

 

Since it has been in power, in fact, the Chinese Communist government has wanted to set up a Church submissive to itself and separate from Rome, with bishops appointed by its own exclusive warrant and ordained without the approval of the Pope, subjugated to a "Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association" That Benedict XVI called "irreconcilable" with Catholic doctrine. An "official" Church, therefore, on the brink of schism. Interwoven with an "underground" Church led by bishops not recognized by Beijing and absolutely faithful to the Pope, who however, pay the full price of clandestinity: oppression, surveillance, arrest, abduction."

 

    Cardinal Zen is the voice today that best represents this "subterranean" Church. "I am the voice of the voiceless not only to protest against the Communist Authorities, but also to put certain questions to our Roman Authorities. All these years actions were posited which offend the doctrine and the discipline of our Church: illegitimate Episcopal ordinations up to four times: almost the total participation of the bishops of the official community at the National Assembly of Catholic representatives. No word came from Rome!  Don't our brothers in China have the right to be confused and pose questions.

 

    The subterranean Chinese Church has been sacrificed on the altar of a political strategy that constitutes the comeback in vogue of the Vatican Ostpolitik. In an intervention on Asia News of Feb. 13th 2018, Zen stated that Parolin, the Secretary of State: "venerates the Ostpolitick diplomacy of his master Casaroli and despise the genuine faith of those who firmly defend the Church founded by Jesus on the Apostles from any interference by secular power." 

 

    In a subsequent letter to the entire College of Cardinals dated September 27, 2019, the Chinese Cardinal accused the Secretary of State of encouraging: "the faithful in China to part of a schismatic Church (independent of the Pope and under the command of the Communist Party)"; He concluded with a dramatic question:

"Can we watch passively this murder of the Church in China by the ones who ought to be protecting Her and defending Her from Her Enemies?"

 

    With these declarations Cardinal Zen has aligned himself with many courageous witnesses to the faith, starting with Cardinal Josef Mindszenty, who, on November 1, 1973, resisted Paul VI to his face, by opposing, with respectful refusal, the Pope's request for his demission from the primatial archiepisopal seat of Estergom. On November 8th of the same year, Paul VI removed him from office, but the Cardinal was no silent and denounced the Vatican Ostpolitik in his Memoirs (Rusoni Editore, Milano 1975). Today the cause for his beatification is underway....

 

    There is no need for great sagacity to understand that Ostpolitik toward Russia was a fruit of a precise political choice made by John XXIII and Paul VI, as the Ospolitik toward China is fruit of Pope Francis' political strategy. The Ostpolitik that Cardinal Zen criticizes, is, in fact, fruit of the Second  Vatican Council....

 

    Cardinal Zen states: "I believe it would be very fruitful to read the opening sermon of Vatican II by Pope John XXIII, where he explained the true meaning of "aggiornmento". fracing all threats of modern civilization the Church must not be afraid, but find the ways apt to show the world the true face of Jesus, the Redeemer of Man."...

 

    The first expression of Ostpolitik, symbolized by the then [Secretary of State] Monsignor Casaroli, was the "pledge"# made by the Holy See to the Soviet government not to condemn Communism in any form whatsoever. This was the condition requested by the Kremlin in permitting the participation of observers from the Moscow patriarchy at Vatican II....

On May 12, Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America (DFLA). wrote a letter to the members of the Platform Committee. She made four recommendations, three of which were specific.

a) "Remove the language opposing the Hyde Amendment and Helm Amendment."  These Amendments bar taxpayer-funded abortions.

b) "Insert the following language committing to making abortion rare." Begins by saying, "As Democrats, we support efforts to make abortions rare." It then goes on to make the case for adoption.

c) "Insert the following language on the diversity of opinion on abortion." This calls on the Platform to "respect the conscience of each American" on issues such as abortion.

The DFLA lost on all three. The Platform calls for "the repeal of the Hyde Amendment," as well as the codification of  "the right to reproductive freedom." Furthermore, the Platform says nothing about making abortions "rare." As for conscience rights, they are nowhere to be mentioned.

    "Tens of millions of American Catholics believe that a morally serious person can look at the industrial.- scale slaughter of innocent children in this country - close to a million abortions performed each year - and say, "I am willing, not only to defend that butcher's bill, but I promise to expand it, if doing so allows me to pursue justice on other fronts."*   For decades, a large slice of American Catholics has convinced itself (or resigned itself) to supporting just such candidates,not because they also support abortion, but despite their opposition to it. This November, millions of America Catholics will do it again...

     If one is willing to tolerating 60 million abortions in order to pursue justice on other fronts - even assuming all those ancillary causes are, in fact, just- what evil one NOT tolerate.

    To be clear, this is not intended as a defense of the current president or his policies, still less an argument in favor of voting for his reelection. Rather, I mention it because it throws into sharp relief the way in which the politics of abortion - more than any other issue of policy - have degraded the ability of most American Catholics to reason well about the exercise of prudence. Nothing (not even the abuse crisis, I would argue) has done more to undermine the Catholic Church credible witness in political life than her impotence with regard to abortion.*

    Many are exasperated by both choices. We can be sure that each side will look with disdain an horror at the moral compromises the other is willing to make.

   

    Politicians like Joe Biden are politically immune to Catholic criticism of their support for abortion. It is unwavering support from millions of Catholic voters who make them so immune. And does anyone doubt that pro-life Catholics who have made a long-standing alliance with Republicans over the issue of abortion have not only also shaped by that partnership in other ways.

    For many of us will be painfully aware that we will choose between the lesser of two evils. Maybe now is as good a time as any to recall that faith without works is dead, ending injustice is not the measure of the Christian life.*

     For the sake of our unborn brothers and sisters, as well as for the pro-life movement and nation as a whole, we have got to expose Joe Biden's anti-Catholic pro-abortion extremism - and that of the whole Democratic Party...

 

    You'll recall that Deal Hudson - a highly respected political expert - went public praising the work you and the Priest for LIfe family did in 2016

 

"No priest or religious had more impact on the Catholic and pro-life voters than Father Frank Pavone. And no Catholic organization had more impact than Priests for Life . To be perfectly candid, it's not even a close call!"

At the risk of bragging, Deal's right. A quick look at 2016 election data tells the story:

 

Nationwide, President Trump captured 53% of the Catholic vote, compared with Mitt Romney's 48% in 2012

In the crucial battleground Rust Belt states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin, President Trump did even better! 54% of Rust Belt Catholics voted for President Trump in 2016. In 2012 Mitt Romney took only 42% of that vote!That's an increase of a whopping 12% in 4 years.

Chapter 32 - "I Cannot Bear My Cross Anymore" p. 360-363

 

"Padre Pio's health seems never to have recovered fully from the illness of 1959 and the strain of the Maccari investigation the following year. He suffered increasingly from chest pains and shortness of breath, which his doctors attributed to asthma and bronchitis. His feet were so swollen that his confreres thought they looked like "melons."....

The Maccari investigation and the restrictions that followed in its wake had failed to reduce his international acclaim. During the Second Vatican Council, which was in session between 1962 and 1965, according to Pyle, "So many bishops from the ecumenical council came up to see Padre Pio that sometimes it seemed that the Council is at San Giovanni Rotondo."...

 

Thinking that his friend was indicating that his wife's cancer had been declared inoperable, Wojtyla tried to console him. "Oh, my God, it is awful for you, Andrze.""Oh, no, you do not understand, not even Wanda ...The doctors are confronted with a mystery. Wanda no longer has cancer. They could not find anything." The physician had in fact determined that Poltawsk's tumor, whether benign or malignant, had completely disappeared.

 

On Nov. 29, Wojtyla wrote Padre Pio: "Venerable Father, the woman living in Cracow, Poland, mother of four young girls, or November 21, just before a surgical operation, suddenly recovered her health. Thanks be to God. Also to you, venerable Father, I give the greatest thanks in the name of the husband and all the family. In Christ, Karol Wojtyla...

 

Padre Pio, in fact, was rumored to have predicted the election of every pope during his lifetime - and beyond! There is no documentary evidence that he ever did - except in one case. In 1958, Padre Pio asked Alberto Galletti, former administrator of the Casa, to relay the following message to the archbishop of Milan, Giovanni Battista Montini: "Tell the Archbishop that he will one day be Pope, and to be prepared. Mind you, tell him this." When Galletti relayed the message to Montini, the archbishop laughed and said, "Oh, these saints get some strange ideas!"

 

After the death of Pope John on June 3, 1963, Padre Pio's confreres pestered him to reveal the identity of the next pontiff. The padre tried to ignore then until the importunities of Padre Eusebio became unbearable. Finally he told him, "It's going to be Montini. Now will you be quiet. ..

 

Paul VI was disturbed by the restrictions that his predecessor  and the Holy Office had placed on Padre Pio and accused Cardinal Ottaviani of confining the Capuchin "like a criminal." ... Padre Clemente immediately removed the order that forced Padre Pio from restrictions to say Mass at irregular hours. He told him after he heard confession he could converse with whomsoever he chose. Once again he allowed lay people to gather in the sacristy to meet with him. 

 

So, as Pio had predicted to Emmanuele Brunatto, everything did, in fact, return to the way it was before. Stop acquiring empathy for one another. We see greed is good, lack of empathy, under performing in matters of character.

1. Michelle Obama deliberately did not mention the Democratic Vice-Presidential nominee Kamala Harris because if she did, it would have clouded up her narrative.

"Maccari then addressed the charges of fanaticism and complained about the shysters who peddled crudely painted likeness of the padre along with their usual faked relics, all within the shadow of the friary. 'This is superstition, not faith!" complained the visitor. Raffale reminded him that this kind of commerce was a problem in religious sanctuaries all over the world ---"even at Rome, which, under the very eye of the Vatican, teems with ... shysters...

 

According to Raffaele, Padre Pio was repelled by Barberini and tried to avoid him whenever possible. When he encountered the secretary, Raffaele observed that Padre Pio's "face changed and reflected a sense of nausea." Another priest was of a different opinion and claimed that Padre Pio liked Barberini and used to joke him.

 

Padre Barberini  told the friars that he had been assigned the task of examining all correspondence. He began opening all letters, even, confidential ones, checking the offerings to see if the Capuchins were really passing on to the Casa those so designated. At length, Maccari decided to interview Padre Pio. A time was set and Pio appeared, only to have Barberini tell him that Maccari was too busy and could not come. The padre, greatly irked because he had to forgo hearing confessions, let the incident pass and "withdrew to his room in holy peace."

 

Later that day, Maccari summoned Padre Pio again, and the two men remained closeted for some time. Pio emerged "serious and serene," but in a conversation with his friend, Padre Raffaele implied that he had been reprimanded for showing favoritism toward certain local women and blamed for the alleged financial mismanagement of his Casa directors. The padre was deeply hurt by Maccari's criticism concerning the location of the Casa, which the visitor indicated who should have been built in Rome or some other large urban center. Apparently, Maccari told Pio, "A month after you are dead, your hospital will have to close its doors!"...

 

Maccari made his report to Alfredo Cardinal Ottaviani, prefect of the Holy Office. On January 31, 1961, the cardinal sent a memorandum to the superior at San Giovanni, stating that the Maccari investigation had uncovered "not a few violations of the religious Rule," and in order to "stop the repetitions of acts that have the character of a cult director towards the person of Padre Pio," the following directives were to be carried out: (1) The priests and bishops were henceforth forbidden to serve Padre Pio' Mass; (2) the time of his Mass was to be varied from day to day; the faithful were to be strictly forbidden to congregate around the professional  to converse with Pio as he entered or departed; 4) no one was to be admitted to the church without a ticket during the hours when the Padre was hearing confessions: (5) Pio was prohibited from receiving women alone in the guest room or anywhere else; (6) the faithful were forbidden to congregate in the sacristy or anywhere else; (7) railings were to be elected around the women's confessionals in the church so that penitents waiting in line could not eavesdrop or pester the padre for favors...

 

The directives of the Holy Office were bitterly resented by many if Pio's followers. Padre Rosario was denounced as "The Jailer" and "The Rosary of the Devil." Rumors continue to circulate. It was said that Cleonice Morcaldi and her friends were trying to convince Padre Pio to leave the friary and to take up residence at the Casa and that they had an order from the Vatican which overruled the local superior...

 

There were further difficulties. On November 17, 1961, Father Clement Neubauer, minister general, came to San Giovanni in person ... to ask Padre Pio to sign over the title deeds of the Casa to the Vatican. This Pio did without protest. ...

    "Padre Pio had been plunged into "terrible grief" when "the beautiful little pope," Pius XII, departed the world on October 9, 1958, but consoled, (according to Padre Agostino) by a vision of the former pontiff in his heavenly home. Pio had been pleased, however, at the election of Angelo Roncalli the aged patriarch of Venice, who became Pope John XXIII. 

    Although some who were in a position to know insisted that the new pope respected and admired Padre Pio, this was not evident to many of the Capuchin's followers, who were appalled when, on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of Pio's ordination, the pope ordered an investigation of his life and ministry in the summer of 1960.

 

    When Monsignor Carlo Maccari, the pope's representative, arrived with his secretary, Don Giovanni Bargerini, at San Giovanni on July 29, Padre Pio was dismayed. "They will make my life impossible. They will put me to an unfavorable light and they will force me to surrender to various obediences." ... thus began an episode which proved one of the most traumatic of Padre Pio's life...

    There seem to have been several concerns that prompted Pope John to send Monsignor Maccari to San Giovanni. Some who were on intimate terms with the pontiff at the time insisted that the Pope was disturbed by disagreeable rumors and acted to protect Padre Pio' life.

 

The pope was reportedly troubled by the Pious Ladies of San Giovanni when word reached him of the obscene spectacle of dozens of women fighting over the best places in church,an of the chains and locks that many of them placed on the pews nearest the altar... There were other problems. The aged Padre Agostino, who had the year before finished his third tenure as minister provincial, was becoming part of the confusion as he habitually stood in the choir overlooking the nave and shouted at the women as they fought over the seats...

 

... It is claimed that 36 tapes were made during a three month period. The Capuchins at San Giovanni Rotondo admitted in 1989 that the guest room was in fact, bugged but denied any attempt was made to record Padre Pio's confessions... There was evidently some dispute over the handling of the offerings. Some of the Capuchins complained that the money sent to the Casa was intended for the Church and the friary but was not handed over for the purpose designed by the donor.  Liikewise, the hospital administration complained just the opposite...

 

    One prelate who, in fact, expressed a measured and moderate criticism of Padre Pio was Albino Luciani, bishop of Vittorio Veneto (and afterward patriarch of Venice and then Pope John Paul I). In his diocesan bulletin of February 4, 1960, Luciani wrote that Padre Pio's ministry was like "an indigestible dainty" and he was concerned that the padre appealed to people with an "exaggerated craving for the supernatural and the unusual." He went on to say that "the faithful have need for solid bread (the Mass, the catechism, the Sacraments), which nourishes them, not chocolates, pastries, and sweetmeats that burgeon and beguile." Luciani was especially troubled by the pilgrimages to San Giovanni Rotondo to see Padre Pio, especially those organized by mail...

 

    Maccari lodged at the Casa. On the first day he went to the friary, assembled the community, including Padre Pio, to whom he was to whom he was introduced and read the decree naming him the apostolic visitor and representative of Pope John XXIII. He announced he will be interviewing ever member of the community, but, according to Padre Raffaele, "He called a pair of religious, and no more. The others waited in vain"...

 

    After interviewing the diocesan clergy, Maccari interviewed the spiritual daughters, both stable and otherwise. Several were horrified because they were asked about Padre Pio's sexual life. One of them ran to Padre Raffaele, complaining,"Only a devil from hell would ask the questions that he did!"...

Raffaele was alarmed at Maccari's attitude, "From the way he talked, he seemed to want to let me understand that he thought that everything connected with Padre Pio was a show and foolery."Meanwhile, according to Padre Raffaele, Maccari's secretary, Giovanni Barberini, was, "acting more like a police detective than a priest," visiting restaurants, pubs, and shops, trying, far into the night, to wheedle out of the people with whom he talked their opinions of Padre Pio...

    "Not long ago, the term "corporate America" and "corporate culture" were synonymous with staid country-club Republican values. Corporate America has been inching left for years, but in recent weeks this trend has exploded. It was once cool and countercultural to be liberal.Today the left is the establishment and conservatives are a part of a new counterculture that quietly seethes as the companies we patronize inundate us with woke virtue signaling.

 

    Start with my morning coffee. I love La Colombe but was dismayed when the company joined the Facebook advertiser boycott, which now has nearly 1,000 companies. La Colombe said in an Instagram post that it was "calling for an end to hate for profit on social media." I went to their website and saw a banner on the home page advertising a limited edition of coffee and mug with proceeds "supporting the ACLU!"

 

    I switched to tea for a couple of days, then got curious and looked at the website of Numi, my favorite tea company. I learned that Numi "stands in solidarity" with Black Lives Matter and the Anti-Police Terror Project, among others, Now I'm drinking water with breakfast.

 

    It should be ironic that La Colombe is on one hand boycotting Facebook for failure to censure enough content, and on the other supporting an organization that supposed to protect civil liberties. In 2018 the ACLU advised Facebook against censoring offensive speech, but it's been silent on the issue during the current boycott. Its most recent free speech press releases condemn the EARN IT ACT, which seeks to curb child-abuse images on social media. The ACLU is concerned the bi-partisan bill would be "a disaster" for "LGBTQ and sex workers communities."

 

    Facebook says it censored 9.6 million "hate speech" posts in the first quarter of 2020, up from 5.7 million posts ikn 2019's last quarter. Apparently that isn't enough for a host of boycotting companies

that my family regularly patronizes, including REI, CVS, Lego, Microsoft, Target and Chipotle. What concerns me about the boycott is that the left is adept at expanding boundaries of unacceptable content to include anything from calls to "build the wall" to skepticism about climate change.

 

    The growing list of woke companies embracing Black Lives Matter and its champions like Colin Kaepernick is even more troubling. Mr. Kaepernick sent a July 4 tweet calling Independence Day a "celebration of white supremacy." Two days later Disney announced it has hired him to produce a series on race. My sons weren't amused when I suggested we cancel our Disney+ subscription. They're already annoyed with me demanding that they avoid Nike, another of Mr. Kaepernick's patrons..."
