    In its centuries-long efforts to dismantle the load-bearing structures of traditional and classical liberal society, Marx dogma in its various forms - communism, socialism, neo-Marxism, Cultural Marxism - has embarked on sustained campaign to weaken and ultimately to abolish the institution of marriage as it has been commonly understood since time immemorial.

    The dissolution or misprision of marriage, as a contract between a man and woman committed to raising a family and recognizing its attendant responsibilities, is a prerequisite for the revolutionary socialist state in which the pivotal loyalty of the individual belongs to the sovereign collective, not to the family.

 
Advocacy and legislation that sunder the intimate love between a man and a woman, that deprive children of male and female parental roles, that comprise the integrity of the family and that dissolve the purpose of marriage as a guarantor of cultural longevity are indispensable strategies essential to realizing the left's master plan. Dismissing the nuclear family as an archaic and repressive arrangement whose time has passed, the state would then operate in loco parentis.

    The problem for the left is that the family is a traditional dynamic that precedes and eclipses the tenure of the authoritarian state, not only because it encourages a prior allegiance, but because it allows for the retention of inheritance and property rights within the generational unit. This is anathema to the Marxist vision of, in historian Jacob Talmon's phrase from The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy, the "all-property-owing system," A function of "political Messianism." The Marxist offensive against marriage may be seen, in part, as the ideological version of a corporate takeover.                                                                                                     

Marx himself married his childhood sweetheart, Jenny von Westphalen, and remained married to her, although his political views did not comport with his lifelong domesticity. In the Communist Manifesto and The German Ideology, he defined marriage as legalized prostitution and a form of female slavery. The fact that he was desperately improvident and ignorant of economics, as Mary Gabriel shows in her fascinating study of the man, Love and Capital, did not prevent him from constructing vast hypothesis grounded on neither hid conduct nor his personal experience.

    Despite his internal contradictions, he was undoubtedly the most instrumental figure in the campaign to demolish the scaffolding of customary society, including marriage and the family. The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, by Marx's collaborator and patron, Friedrich Engels, has made the left's ultraist agenda absolutely clear, referring to "the pairing family and inoculated monogamy" as a community of "leaden ennui" and a modus operandi for the class - and masculine-oriented "bequeathment of property." It had to be smashed.

      
An effective way to destroy marriage and the family was advanced by Communist theorist Georg Lukacs, who introduced the concept of "cultural terrorism," which involved the liquidation of religion, monogamy, and the ostensibly male-dominated family. Lukacs advocated the introduction in the schools of - and as minister in the 1919 Hungarian Bolshevik government of Bela Kun actually installed - courses on free love, sexual liberation, and Freud's notion of "polymorphous perversity," which he believed a revolutionary necessity.

    We see his pernicious influence at work in the cultural obsession with sex, the zeal for so-called sex re-assignment, the the insensate proliferation of pronominal "genders" into a Heinz 57 omnium-gatherum. (Canada's Supreme Court whiffling on bestiality if another variant of this rubbish.) It is also a cardinal value in the educational establishment, for example in my home province of Ontario, where, under the direction of former premier Kathleen Wynne, an avowed lesbian, sex ed classes exposed young children to varieties of sexual practices far beyond their level of emotional developmen.                                                                            

Leftism attempts to dismantle conventional society by unleashing a multi-pronged assault against it, including rewriting history, undermining religious observance and subverting traditional morality, a program sedulously advanced by the pseudo-discipline of "Critical Theory." This pedantic and ostentious schematism was promoted by clique of salon provocateurs known as the Frankfort School in their efforts to develop what they called "social emancipatory strategies." They were the answer to the rhetorical question Lukacs asked in his 1916 study "The Theory of the Novel": "Who will save us from Western civilization?"....(All of the above have been successful in changing traditional America.)

"Still, it is often argued that Muslims share many values in common with Christians and Jews, and that Islam plays a major role in helping Muslims govern their passions and curtail their appetites. After all, Muslims are opposed to pornography, abortion and the LGBT agenda.But a closer look reveals that self-governance practiced by Muslims if often akin to the "self-governance" exhibited by North Korean peasants. They behave themselves because they have to.                                                                                                                        

Most people will learn to control themselves if the alternative is an electric shock or its psychological equivalent. And most will adjust their consciences accordingly. For every Iranian woman who refuses to wear the hijab, there are a hundred who have convinced themselves that wearing it is a proof of virtue.

There is, however, a double standard in Islam when it comes to controlling passions. Women are expected to control themselves; men, not so much. Indeed the woman carries a double burden. If a man loses his sexual self-control, he has no one to  blame but a woman. Women are responsible not only for controlling themselves, but also for the man's loss of self-control. In the presence of an uncovered women, the man cannot be expected to control himself.

This element in Islamic culture help why to explain why the incidence of rape skyrocketed in England, Germany, Sweden, and other European countries after the mass Muslim migration of 2015-2016. Young Muslim Muslim men suddenly encountered streets full of women who, in addition to being uncovered, were also infidels, & therefore completely unqualified for the protection owed to Muslim women who dress modestly.

This is the Islamic version of vive la difference. Indeed the whole Islamic system is built on a structure of differences and inequalities. Chief among these are that men are superior to women and Muslims are superior to non-Muslims. In fact, Islamic law stipulates that the value of a Christian or Jew is only one third of a Muslim.

This brings us back by a circuitous route to the Founders and the founding document - the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration states that "all men are created equal," and "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." But, as I wrote in an earlier: "Which Creator is the Declaration referring to? It would make no sense to claim that Allah would qualify for the position, because in Islam all men are not created equal, Muslims, who are described in the Koran as 'the best of people,' are considered to be decidedly superior to non-Muslims.                                                                                                                                      

 It is good bet that when the Founders spoke of God and religion, they were not thinking of Allah and Islam. And it's an even better bet that that when William Barr talks about the benefits of religion, he's mainly talking about the benefits conferred by the Judeo-Christian moral system.

In as sense, Barr's speech was a counter-cultural statement. By omitting any reference to Islam he was going against the tide of contemporary culture - a culture which insists that all religions and cultures are interchangeable, and that all are equally good. Considering that Barr was speaking to a Catholic audience, it's ironic that more than a few in the hierarchy now seem to subscribe to that very proposition.

I am sure that Barr would be the first to agree that a Muslim's freedom of religion is and ought to be protected by the First Amendment. But Islam itself claims to be a whole different hall of wax in relation to other religions.

On matters of equality and religious freedom, it differs markedly from Christianity. It wouldn't be truthful to pretend otherwise.Since Muslims make up less than two percent of the American population, the questions raised here seem like merely academic questions....                                                                                          

Now, however, in many parts of Europe the number of Muslims who attend mosque on Friday will soon surpass  number of Christians who attend Sunday services.

We tend to think that Islamization will never happen in America. But twenty years ago, who would have believed that the number of "nones" (the religiously unaffiliated) would exceed the number of Catholics in the U.S? Barr asks, "What is it that can fill the spiritual void in the hearts of the individual person?"...Will it be a resurgence of Judeo-Christian morals as Barr hopes? Or will it be some rigid secular orthodoxy as he fears? Or will it be, as is increasingly the case in Europe, the religion of Muhammad?"

"On October 11 Attorney General William Barr delivered a powerful speech on religious freedom at the University of Notre Dame. The Attorney General detailed the many ways in which the State has taken side with various anti-religious pressure groups not only to curtail religious freedom, but to force irreligion and secular values on people of faith.

Barr reminded his audience that religion provides great benefits to the State which the State cannot provide for itself; and without which it descends either into totalitarian or licentiousness. "The fact is," said Barr, "that no secular creed has emerged capable of performing the role of religion." There's nothing new here, of course, and Barr cites a number of brilliant thinkers who have said as much - John Adams, Edmund Burke and James Madison. The main point they all agreed on is that you can't have self-government unless individuals learn to govern themselves. And the most reliable way that people learn to control their appetites is through religion.

But, as Barr points out, we need to keep reminding ourselves of the connection between religion, virtue, and freedom because, when we forget, religion declines and social pathology abounds. At that point, the State steps in to restore order - but almost always with a heavy hand.

There's much more. Barr's talk is worth reading and pondering. It provides a great deal of much needed clarity on issues that are seldom discussed in the mainstream media.But there is one area that Barr understandably avoids. If religion in general is declining in the West, there is one religion that is not. Islam is growing in the West, and all over the world. During the course of his talk he frequently alludes to the "Judeo-Christian moral system," "Christianity," and, not surprisingly given his audience, the importance of "Catholic Education." But he never mentions Islam - a religion that affects the lives of more than a billion people.

In one way that's not surprising. Barr is simply following in the footsteps of the Founders. When they spoke of the benefits of religion to society, it seems obvious that the religion they had in mind was Christianity. After all, that is the religious tradition in which they were raised.

In addition, most of the founders would had only a limited knowledge of Islam. When Jefferson and Adams - then ambassadors to France and England respectively - met with Tripoli's ambassador to England, they were surprised to hear his justification for the Barbary State's war against other nations.

The ambassador answered us that it was founded on the laws of their prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners ... Twenty years later, when the first American edition of the Koran was printed in 1806, the editor saw fit to offer a few choice words about its contents: "This book is long conference of God, the angels, and Mahomet, which that false prophet very grossly invented."

Although the Koran is now readily available in America, many, if not most Americans, don't know much more about Islam than was known in America circa 1776. A fair number of Americans still think that the word "Islam" means "peace."Undoubtedly, Bill Barr knows considerably more about Islam than the average American. And that may be why he does not include it in his mention of religions that improve the nation's moral tone. That's because Islam is not exactly the poster boy for the argument that religion benefits society.

Most Muslim majority nations are quasi-totalitarian states. In the Islamic Republic of Iran, Christians can go to jail for practicing their religion, and Muslim women can be imprisoned for refusing to wear the hijab. In Saudi Arabia, Christian tourists can be arrested for openly displaying a Bible, and in Pakistan, one wrong word about Muhammad can put you behind bars for years. Meanwhile, Islamic Turkey holds the world record for the number of jailed journalists... (to be continued)   George H. Kubeck

" An American version of cosmopolitanism began to go off the rails in the early 20th century. In 1915 essay in The Nation, the scholar Horace Kallen attacked standard notions of assimilation as a plot by the Anglo-Saxons for continued dominance. "The 'American race' is a totally unknown thing," he wrote arguing instead for "a democracy of nationalities."

The common tongue of this democracy is still English, "but each nationality expresses its emotional and voluntary life in its own language." The country merely serves as a platform for multitude nations living within the borders: "As the foundation and background for the realization of the distinctive individuality of each natio that composes it."

Randolph Bourne picked  up the theme in The Atlantic in a 1916 essay titled "Trans-national America." He saw immigration as an opportunity to create "the first international nation," a "cosmopolitan federation of national colonies."

Randolph at the time, this point of view, this point of view steadily insinuated itself into the mainstream Horace Kallen took a bow in 1972 as a 90-year-old, with multiculturalism on the rise. "It takes about 50 years for an idea to break through and become vogue," he stated. "No one likes an intruder, particularly when he is upsetting the common place." ...

"The liberal political philosopher Richard Rorty argued in mid 1990s that there was much to admire in the academic Left's focus on underrepresented groups. "But there is a problem," he wrote, "with this left: it is unpatriotic. In the name of 'politics of difference,' it refuses to rejoice in the country it inhabits. It repudiates the idea of a national identity, and emotion of national pride."

"Relatedly, the end of the Cold War engendered a newly potent transnationalism, contemptuous of national boundaries and supportive of institutions of global governance. In this view, old loyalties were not just anachronistic but morally unsupportable. The social critic Richard Sennett wrote of "the evil of a shared national identity." Professor of law and ethics Martha Nussbaum warned of the "morally dangerous" dictates of "patriotic pride," commending instead a commitment to the "worldwide community of human beings."...

"As the long nationalist era after after the Civil War faded, so did the emphasis on patriotism in instruction. Patriotic themes disappeared from school readers steadily throughout the 20th century, and history itself has begun to vanish from our educational system.

"Less than a fifth of colleges and universities require their students to take an American-history or -government course. Of the top colleges and universities in the country, only a fraction require even history majors to take a course in American history, although they often have geographic distribution requirements (which helpfully exclude the United States). Gender, racial, class, and environmental history have captured the heart of the academy. Worse, of course, there has been a deliberate effort to trash America's statesmen and heroes as exemplars of racism, sexism, and classicism. 

"An anti-national history is, on top of everything, profoundly ungrateful. It fails to credit our ancestors for achievements on an epic scale. Without doubt, this book by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) "Co-Workers Of The Truth" - Meditations For Every Day of the Year, Ignatius Press, 1992, has been a strong influence on me. Imagine 365 daily readings repeated 15 times. Will share with you the meditation for Nov. 17.

"The courage to recognize truth and the joy we take in it are fundamental marks of the Christian Faith. It is through them that we come to understand once more the missionary mandate of the Church.

It is only through them that we again receive law and meaning: human beings need truth. The world needs truth. Without it our lives remain untrue and that means unredeemed. The truth that is bestowed on us does not come from ourselves.

We cannot take any credit for it, but neither are we allowed to conceal it out of a false humility. We deprive the world as it were of the most important raw materials that are essential to its life when we timidly bury truth like the hireling in the Gospel who buried his talent instead of turning it to profit.

Admittedly all human words are limited and imperfect; so, too, the human words by which we confess the faith are always insufficient. Hence it will always be possible to intensify and enrich them. They are open to all the truth of the world.

But his limitation of human language and the insufficiency of our speech must not cause us to lapse into relativism that rejects truth. The true God has manifested himself to us in Jesus Christ, and has shown us the truth: God wills the salvation of all; he wants us to become ministers by bringing the light of truth into the world.

C) LASTLY, I ATTENDED THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF ST. POLYCARP ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18TH.  YOU WERE THERE. BISHOP SOTO GRADUATED IN 1970.     "Pope Benedict seems to have been fully convinced that Padre Pio was genuine. He told a prominent attorney, "Padre Pio is truly a man of God. Some people have doubted this,but you help make him knownTo Fernando Damianil a prominent Churchman from Salto, Uruguay, he said, "Truly Padre Pio is an extraordinary man, the like of whom God sends to earth from time to time for the purpose of converting men." To Archbishop Gagliardi of Manfredonia, who was passing on to the Vatican the denunciatory letters of Miscio, Fraccacreta, and others, Benedict warned, "You must proceed cautiously concerning Padre Pio. It's bad to be unbelieving." As long as he lived, Benedict XV would keep Padre Pio's enemies at bay. p. 180

 

"By the middle of 1919, Padre Pio's hope that the war, terrible as it was, might prove a health-giving purge for Italy, as well as the dawn of a spiritual reawakening... The news of Padre Pio's stigmata, coming as it just did after the end of the Great War, found especial fertile soil. Large numbers of people were looking for someone who was truly close to God, someone who had answers to life problems....

 

"It was not until March 1919 that Padre Benedetto was able to come to San Giovanni to examine Padre Pio's stigmata. To Padre Agostino, who, in late September, had noted a spot on Pio's hand, the provincial wrote, "They are not spots or blemishes, but real wounds, perforating the hand and feet... The wound in the side is a real gash that issues either blood or bloody fluid. Friday it issued blood."....

 

"Padre Benedetto at this time ordered the formal examination of Padre Pio's stigmata by Professor Luigi Romanelli, which took place on May 15 and 16. Unfortunately, Padre Raffaele of San Giovanni Rotondo, who had recently been assigned to the friary, leaked part of Romanelli's report to the Naples Mattino which ran an article on Padre Pio.... Benedetto flew into a rage, and reprimanded Padre Paolino, warning him he was risking the fury of the Holy See by permitting the leakage of confidential information to the press...

 

"Padre Pio often put in a sixteen-hour day, mostly spent in hearing confession. He spent his evening hours trying to keep up with correspondence with his spiritual daughters and usually did not retire until one o'clock in the morning. That left him with little more than two hours of sleep... Inevitably there was criticism. The secular clergy of San Giovanni took an especial jaundiced view of Padre Pio's celebrity. Great numbers of people began to forsake the city churches to worship at Our Lady of Grace and make their confessions to the friars, dismissing the arch-priest Don Giuseppe Prencipe and his staff as hypocrites and spiritual bankrupts....

 

"So that he could greet those unable to find a place either in the cramped church or tiny sacristy, Padre Pio was allowed to go to a window and bless the throngs that gathered in the courtyard at certain hours. The blessing of the crowd, however, drew immediate criticism from the city clergy, who claimed that this was proof that the Capuchins were putting the stigmatist on display....

 

"In June 1919, a young woman identified only as "the niece of the archpriest of Cagli" asked Padre Pio for the grace of healing. Her legs were so unequal in length that she just could barely touch the ground with the tip of the foot of the shorter leg. Immediately after speaking to Padre Pio, she was able to rest both feet squarely on the ground and walk normally. According to Paolino, this event took place in front of numerous witnesses."...

 

"I spoke (with Padre Pio) for about ten minutes snd would have continued to speak until nightfall if conscience had not stopped me... As he kissed Padre Pio's hand, Klugkist smelled the "strong perfume which emanated from the stigmata." Leaving his presence he concluded, "I found myself with the divine Ego. In [Pio]  alone I found no trace of the human ego." Other spiritual teachers he was convinced "were men more or less imbued with the divine, while he, on the other hand, is nothing but an instrument of the divine. He has reached the goal of Union."...

Excerpts from LifeSite News: Toronto, Nov. 8, 20190 (LIfeSiteNews) - The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) voted early Friday morning to add "gender identity" and "gender expression" to its code of conduct.

Critics say the move will compel Catholic students and teachers to submit to LGBT ideology that claims. contrary to Catholic teaching, that males can "transition" into females and females into males.

The TCDSB trustees voted eight to four to add the terms, as well as "marital status and family status." to the code, which governs students and teachers. The Toronto Catholic School Board is one of the largest boards in Canada with over 90,000 students.

According to the policy update, "all members of the school community must respect and treat others fairly, regardless of, for example, race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship. creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status or disability.

According to a TCDSB report submitted just before the meeting, the Archdiocese of Toronto has approved adding the terms with  proviso that these be "interpreted thru the lens of the Catholic faith." The report "was the first time the archdiocese's views on the matter had been made public," reported the Toronto Star....

But Jack Fonseca of Campaign Life Coalition says 'there's no such thing as 'a Catholic lens,' through which people can be taught to respect sin and embrace sin." "The resulting language is a betrayal of the Catholic faith and a form of apostasy," said Fonseca, director of political operations for Campaign Life.

"Gender identiy theory directly attacks the image of God in creation, which was created male and female, an an attack on the image of God is a form of apostasy," he told LifeSiteNews.... Friday morning's vote comes after months of bitter controversy generated by an October 2018 ministry of education request that all school boards align their codes of conduct to comply with the provincial code and Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC).... Boards were asked to comply by November 4. ...

Delegate Chris Elliot, a youth minister from St. Timothy's spoke for many who opposed amending the policy;  he warned doing so was a "Trojan horse" that would fundamentally undercut Catholic beliefs.

"Your vote as board members will have far-reaching consequences, I daresay it will be historic," Elliot told trustees. "It will either be the day where you took a firm stand for Christ and defended our Catholic beliefs and values or ... the day timidly surrendered them for all of us."

P.S. All of the above will occur in the U.S.A.  I recall when same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada by the CINOP (Catholic-in-name-only politician). We could have obtained under the George Bush administration a Constitutional Amendment that marriage is between a man and a woman. But U.S.A. Catholic leadership was not there.

"The war was finally over and the worst part of the epidemic had subsided and word of Padre Pio's stigmatization began to spread, despite Padre Benedetto's firm insistence that the phenomena be kept secret.Padre Paolino blamed this on the inability of Nina Campanile and other spiritual daughters to keep their promise to maintain silence. Paolina wrote, in words capable of driving feminists wild with rage, "Women ...are not made to keep secrets. And even when they have good intentions ... they still have to reveal that secret to an intimate friend... and then it happens that from the secret becomes public knowledge." .... By the spring of 1919 news of the stigmata was beginning to filter to the world outside the friary of Our Lady of Grace, and Padre Pio was on the threshold of a ministry of colossal magnitude..

 

"There are no recorded instances of the stigmata before the thirteenth century. In 1224, the five wounds appeared on the hands ,feet, and side of St. Francis of Assisi while he prayed in ecstasy

on Mount Alverna.Francis vision was similar in some ways to that of Pio... Jesus crucified, who appeared to Francis in the form of  the seraph, told him. "I have given you the stigmata which are the emblems of my Passion, so that you may be my standard bearer." The wounds of St. Francis, which the "Seraphic Father" bore until his death two years later, were slightly different from those of Padre Pio...

 

"For the next seven centuries, at least four hundred individuals, nearly all Roman Catholic, most of them female and Italian, were reported to have borne the stigmata, in various forms...There were several stigmatics contemporary with Padre Pio. The best known was a Bavarian laywoman by the name of Therese Neumann; eleven years younger than Padre Pio, she received the stigmata in the side in 1925 and wounds in the side in 1925 and wounds in the hands and feet the following year. These persisted until her sudden death from a heart attack in 1962....No study was undertaken of the stigmata Padre Pio's death for the singular reason that the wounds disappeared entirely shortly before -without leaving the slightest trace or faintest scar!

 

The stigmata were not pleasant to behold. The hand wounds usually looked enormous, but most of the mass that covered the entire palm was dried blood. The actual lesions were the size of a small coin.... Drs. Bignami and Festa both commented on Padre Pio's physical appearance in 1919. Bignami commented on the Friar's "delicate constitution." Pio was small-boned, flabby, with undeveloped muscles  a pale complexion, and a "sickly  suffering look." Nonetheless, the pathologist conceded that "the expression of his face is full of goodness and sincerity." and despite his physically unprepossessing appearance, he was able to work fifteen or sixteen hours straight without a bite to eat. When Pio did eat, Bignami observed he consumed very little. ...

 

"The blood pressure (166/90) was normal. Dr. Giuseppe Sata, Pio's physician from 1956 to 1968 also reported that none of the tests he ran on his patient's blood revealed any abnormality. "He had beautiful bloodwork".... Most witnesses testify that the wound in the side was shaped like a cross... Romanelli, however, was positive that when he examined Padre Pio in June 1919, the side wound was not cruciform, but "a clean cut parallel to the ribs," about three inches long....

 

At times, such as in Lent, the wounds seem to have bled more copiously. There are persistent reports that sometimes he bled from extensive lesions on his torso, suggestive of the wounds received by Christ when Pilate ordered his flagellation. The best evidence of this is extant photograph of Padre no record of anyone observing any wounds on the person of Padre Pio except those in the hands,feet, and side. Padre Pio took great pains to conceal the wounds.. One of the most extraordinary characteristics of Padre Pio's stigmata was the peculiarly fragrance of the aroma of the blood that issued from them....

 

Padre Pio showed no interest whatsoever in attempts to explain his stigmata. When asked why his hand wounds were in the palms rather than in the wrists (where victims of crucifixion were routinely nailed), he shrugged his shoulders and said, "Oh, I guess it would be too much to have them exactly like they were in the case of Our Lord."

"In 2013, "The Collected Writings of Lin Zhao - including her returned prison writings and other extant works and correspondence compiled and annotated by her dedicated friends - was privately printed. I was given a copy.... I also paid my respects to Lin Zhao at her tomb, above which a surveillance camera was installed in 2008, in the lead up to the fortieth anniversary of her execution, lest, a spiritual and political plaque break out undetected from her tomb.

 

"In my exclusive interview with the now retired judge who reviewed Lin Zhao's case in 1981 for rehabilitation, I asked about his decision to return her prison writings ... an four journal notebooks that contain here "battlefield diaries," essays, and ink copies of her "blood letter home." Using a pen, she had meticulously copied onto notebooks and loose sheets of paper all her blood writings after they were handed to the guards so that her words would be preserved."
