    I learned economics from a Marxist. It was at the height of the Cold War, a critical moment when the survival of the West seemed in doubt, an age when many people, even those under no illusions about the unfolding terror of Soviet communism wondered whether capitalism days might be numbered.

      My tutor at a famous university in the English heartlands was one of the most prominent socialist intellectuals. His works anatomized and anathematized - the capitalist system from the traditional Marxian perspective. 

 

    His wider writings championed a structuralist view of society and its institutions. He not only inveighed against the supposed moral inferiority of capitalism. He was convinced about the inevitability of its collapse under the weight of is contradictions. 

    But Andrew Glyn was first and foremost a teacher, an intellectually insatiable pedagogue with a desire to foster among his students a hunger for a broad understanding of the discipline. His reading list each included the canon of classical economic thought (Adam Smith, David Hume, David Ricardo), John Maynard Keynes and his followers, and a thorough going in the modern neo-classical and monetarist works (F.A. Hayek and Chicago school, Milton Friedman especially).

 

    No thinker - no ideology - was off limits. It was the early days of Reagan-Thatcher counterrevolution. Neither seemed guaranteed of success at the time, and we were encouraged - in fact required - both to learn what they were doing and to understand dispassionately its intellectual origins. 

    Glyn was also - unexpectedly for those of us who thought communists were touche types with disdain for the protocols of petit bourgeois society- a rigid disciplinarian. Woe betide you if you hadn't done the reading each week. Obliging attempts to blame our sloth on the inherent class injustices of a medieval university system or the ennui induced by late-stage capitalism would be greeted with a thin smile and a final warning.

 

    He believed - passionately - that his own critique of the Western system was right. But he had no intention of forcing his students onto a narrow intellectual path that would preclude the possibility of our embracing alternatives.

"Critical Race Theory is the Opposite of Education"

 

    This is the essence of a liberal education: the nurturing and development of independent minds by erudite teachers of various ideological persuasion through exposure to the widest range of intellectual inquiry. It is what made England, and then America, the greatest force for civilizational progress the world has known. And it is in peril.

    The crisis engulfing our institutions represents the struggle for ascendancy of an ideology that is literally the antithesis of the educational values that have driven the West's unrivaled economic, social and technological progress for the past few centuries.

 

    Critical race theory - and its and its variable postmodern cousins is not some interesting interpretation of social and political history that we are free to examine, embrace or discard. It proponents do not seek to frame a critique of modern America to be tested alongside alternatives.

    They insist that a traditionally liberal approach to evaluating the merits of competing ideas is itself an outgrowth of an illegitimate system of oppression. Rejection of their critique is the product of false consciousness, since critical thought is itself invalid, the product of white male hegemony.

 

    This isn't really education at all, not in the sense in which the term has been understood in the post-enlightenment era. It is closer to pre-enlightenment religious instruction: the imparting of doctrinal truth with the practical aim of saving souls and reordering the world. Hence its migration from college campuses to K-12 schools, where the practitioners expect to find supple and more-suggestible minds.They have taken to heart the old Jesuit maxim about the first seven years of life. 

    There are encouraging signs that this recent migration itself may be sowing the seeds of its own destruction. Parent across the country and the political spectrum are vocally resisting. In local elections voter have seized the opportunity to oust the ideologues pushing this un-American extremism on their children.

 

    Growing numbers of professionals, however eager to display their progressive credentials, know that they owe much of their success to a steeping in the cannon of Western of Western thought and are growing uncomfortable with the idea that their children might now be taught that Ibram X. Kendi has more to offer than John Locke or Jane Austen.

    Most telling, the attempts by the ideology's defenders to redefine critical race theory suggest they know how indefensible it is. Efforts by multiple states to restrain its spread have been falsely characterized by journalist and progressives as attempts to stop children from learning about slavery and segregation. When you have to disguise your own ideology to purge it of its noxious core, you know you're losing.

     I learned economics from a Marxist. But the most important thing he taught me was that open inquiry was the antidote to ruinous extremism. It's a lesson we may finally be relearning.

This should've done years ago. It was delayed by clerics of your mindset. The following needs to be memorized by all Catholics.

 

    In the House there are 77 Catholic Democrats and 57 Catholic Republicans. In the Senate there are 14 so-called Catholic Democrats Senators and 11 Catholic Republican Senators. The first group supports the absolute evils of abortion, euthanasia and gender choice. And you want them to be allowed to receive the Holy Eucharist during Mass.  Are you out of your mind?     When I think of Venezuela, I see a tragedy that could have been avoided during the Trump administration. The Democrats could have persuaded Maduro to resign and then have free elections.

But they did not. Why? It would have been a victory for the people of Venezuela and President Trump.

    Thanks to lies, corruption and Cuban communist subversion, Maduro is still in power. Lies ARE the order of the day in America. It starts with President Biden. "He has created a problem for himself and for the Church" by saying he's a devoted Catholic.    "On most days, Venezuela's authoritarian government reports a daily Covid-19 death toll of about 17 victims, a striking low number given that South America as a continent records the highest rate of the pandemic.

     But Venezuelan funeral-service operators say they regularly cremate at least six times more bodies a day than the official toll - a telling indicator because health authorities want those who have died of respiratory disease to be cremated rather than buried.

      Health-sector advocates and rights organization say Venezuela is greatly under-reporting the pandemic's toll in a country where the regime has long been accused of hiding and manipulating health data, arresting doctors who publicize deficiencies in hospitals and failing to report on epidemics to an international organizations.

    The country of 28 million officially has recorded 2,500 Co-19 deaths, a fraction of more than 180,000 lives lost in Peru, which has a slightly larger population. Some health experts say there could be 20 times more citizens dying daily from the virus than the government says, which could mean tens of thousands of fatalities since Covid-19 arrived.

     "People know that the number of cases the government announces every day doesn't reflect what they are seeing around them," said Marino Gonzales, a public health expert at Simon Bolivar University in Caracas. "And they know there isn't a short-term solution. 

    Doctors United, an advocacy group says it has independently documented 580 deaths of healthcare professionals, five times the figure reported by the regime and topping the number of doctors and nurses who have died in  more populous Argentina.

 

    In a recent poll by the Caracas polling firm Meganalisis, 84% of respondents said they didn't believe the government's Covid-19 data, &  98% said they didn't know of anyone who had received a vaccine.

Fearing the care in hospitals that regularly lack water, electricity, oxygen tanks, and medicines, many Venezuelans infected with the corona virus, are quietly suffering and dying - at home, their cases never reported to authorities, said medical personnel and families.

 

    Meanwhile, the vaccinations campaign headed by the cash-strapped government of President Nicolas Maduro, which the U.S. calls an illegitimate dictatorship, [which is absolutely true] is so slow that the country's National Academy of Medicine, an independent institution considered an authority on healthcare matters, says it will take a decade to inoculate the country....

    Venezuela has received 2.7 million vaccines, Mr. Maduro has said, a fraction of what other Latin American countries have imported. He says the vaccination drive will increase this week, with shots given mainly to holders of a state-issued identification card that rights groups say is a tool for social control..... Without the vaccines and treatment for Covid-19, the country could become a home for new variants that could spread with migrants as they flee the country....

      "There's no way for us to know how many have actually died," said Maria Eugenia Landaeta, head of the infectious-disease department at Central University Hospital in Caracas. She said that her hospital conducts just 15 Covid-19 tests a day, down from 120 a year ago. "You have to justify every test in a report. It's slowed down everything." she said.

    The government's hard-line response to the pandemic hasn't helped. Last year, the intelligence agency Sebin rounded up those believed to be suffering from the illness and isolated them in vacant schools and hospitals.
