On this day in 1796, George Washington gave his Farewell Address to Congress. Immensely popular (who were even then calling him the Father of the Country), he now made it unequivocally clear how important he felt was the influence of Church upon State:
Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports ... And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained WITHOUT RELIGION. .. reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality CAN PREVAIL IN EXCLUSION OF RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLE. HOPEFULLY, OUR PRESENT SUPREME WILL MAKE A DECISION ON THIS MATTER WHICH HAS SO DIVIDED US. YES, LET EACH STATE DECIDE WHETHER IT WANTS TO LIVE OR TO DIE.
