"SAN FRANCISCO SCHOOL BOARD UNDER FIRE"
Dear Patrick Wolff,
We don't have the kind of teachers, adult Americans had, when they were growing up. Teach our kids reading, writing and arithmetic and keep politics out off our youngsters' education.  Get them proficient in the basics. As a retired public school teacher, maybe my experience will help you.

In the name of common sense, reason and logic, let's review Senate Bill 160, the Rodda Act which was passed in the California legislature in 1975. I remember that bill very well. It changed the nature of the once great and noble teaching profession. It unionized and politicized this honorable profession.
I fought the process relentlessly before and after 1975. Why?

For five years, (1962-1966) I was a voluntary member of the N.E.A., C.T.A. and W.T.A. (Westminster Teachers Association) They were a Professional Teacher Organization for over 100 years. Their literature said no to unionism. I was a proud member.
Then all of sudden, N.E.A. and C.T.A. succumbed to Governor Jerry Brown's Rodda Act, and the competition from the New York Teacher unions, and the intoxicated slogan of teacher power, and the mid-set of Sol Alinsky. Overnight, the N.E.A. and C.T.A. became a union, and they left me.

Our Governor Deukmejian saw the evil of unionizing the professional teacher. He was unable to fix the problem. Let's go back to an updated Winton Act and repeal S.B. 160 to bring about the full and complete integrity of the teaching profession.

Unionism was never intended for public employees, least of all teachers. (President Franklin Roosevelt would turn over in his grave.) We will talk later about what it legalized and here's one thought. "You pay for your social and political agenda and I will pay for mine, but don't force me as a teacher to pay for yours" In Westminster Schools, we fought this destructive process which changed the nature of the teaching profession.

As president of the Westminster Professional Educators Group, I spoke to the School Board on 7-6-78 as follows:

"We are especially proud that for the past eight years, our district is one of the few in the State of California where teachers have had a choice of membership, - professional, union, - and the FREEDOM not to belong to any organization at all. "

"Our district is UNIQUE. In 95% to 97% of the 1043 school districts, teachers do not have that triple choice... We continue to have faith in the principles of cooperation, collegiality, freedom of choice, teacher professional growth, and uninterrupted quality education for our children...."

" Ironically, two years ago this month on our 200th anniversary as a nation the principles of adversary relationship, exclusivity, even agency fees and coercion were legalized... We pledge a positive common sense approach, a sharing of ideas with fellow educators, parents and citizens based on the principle that there are at least two sides to problem solving and issues..."

"We invite all here present including parents and citizens in the community to attend our monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at Midway City Elementary School 3:30 to 4:30 P.M."

"It is with pride that I introduce to you our board members for this coming years.
1st Vice-President - Jolene Hanley                                       Secretary - Bea Nickerson
2nd Vice-President - Rosie Davis                                          Treasurer - Dorothy Boydston"
