It was obvious that the earlier view of the U.S. government - that American Communism because of their loyalty to the Soviet Union, might spy on their own government - was true, but it did not go far enough, Venona, together with our other sources, made it clear, that American communists with access to sensitive information were expected by the Party to turn it over to the Soviets. ... Earl Browder head of the American Communist Party was deeply involved in recruiting Party members and vetting them for espionage....
What surprised us was the Venona code name for Jews - "Rats." ... Why? Because saw European Jews who supported democracies as an impediment to Soviet control in Eastern and Central Europe. Both as Americans and as Jews, we concluded that the Soviet Union and its intelligence operations were enemies of our freedom...
But was it correct to view the Soviet Union as the "focus of evil" in the postwar world? (This concept, first advanced in the early 1950's by Time magazine editor and Alger Hiss accuser Whittaker Chambers, resurfaced in the speeches of President Ronald Reagan some three decades later.) Was it valid to see Soviet Communism as an ideology no less pernicious than Nazism...
The Communist Party USA leadership and its rank and file were composed of Americans who willingly gave up their primary allegiance to a foreign power.... P.S. Today is our National Day of Prayer. Pray for the conversion of America. Recall, for decades, we prayed for the conversion of Communist Russia. And the miracle of communist collapse occurred in Russia without violence. I believe in miracles. The election of Donald Trump was a miracle. The communist/socialist ideology is alien to America. Sadly, we have professors on our campuses who indoctrinate our students to economic and religious stupidity? Who are they?
