CHINA - VATICAN SEEKS TO RENEW CHURCH PACT

    The Vatican is seeking to renew an agreement with China's government on the leadership of the Catholic Church there, despite concerns over religious freedom and criticism that the deal has abandoned members of the country's so-called underground church. [Hong Kong's  Cardinal Zen is deeply concerned.]

 

    The pact gives Beijing and the Vatican a say in appointing bishops, with the pope retaining a veto right, a senior Vatican official familiar with the document said. The Vatican has agreed not to approve the ordination of Chinese bishops without approval of Beijing, but the government has yet to recognize nearly 20 former underground bishops whose ordination preceded the agreement said the Rev.      The Catholic Church's former Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S. once again warned voters that warring principalities unseen to the human eye will clash on Election Day. The archbishop previously framed the political landscape to a battle between "children of light and children of darkness" in June.

    "Presidential elections in November represent an epochal challenge, a biblical challenge, the outcome of which will be decisive not only for the United States of America but for the whole world," he wrote in a letter offered, but not read, to Wednesday's National Catholic Prayer Breakfast.
