Why should we accept the ACLU’s interpretation of the First Amendment to the Constitution? IT IS FALSE ONE. Here is the read to the 1st Amendment. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievance.” May I share Matthew D. Staver’s book, “Take Back America” – 2000-2011 – Chapter 3
Separation of Church and State: “This country was established upon the assumption that religion was essential to good government. On July 13, 1787, the Continental Congress enacted the Northwest Ordinance, which stated: ‘Religion, morality and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall be forever encourages.’ The First Amendment prohibited the federal amendment from establishing a religion to which the several states must pay homage. The 1st Amendment provided assurance that the federal government would not meddle in the affairs or religion within the states…”
“Today, groups like the America Civil Liberals Union (ACLU) and Americans United for Separation of Church and State have attempted to create an environment wherein government and religion are adversaries. Their favorite phrase has been “separation of church and state.”… Most people believe the phrase is in the Constitution. Nowhere is “separation of church and state” referenced in the Constitution. This phrase was in the former Soviet Union’s Constitution…”
Jefferson … wrote: “On every question of construction, [we must] carry ourselves back to the time when the constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the test, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was a part.”…
“The Danbury Baptist Association committee wrote to the President stating, “Religion is at all times and places a Matter between God and Individuals – that no man ought to suffer in Name, person or affects on account of his religious Opinions.” Jefferson’s response letter went through at least two drafts:”
“Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that legitimate powers of government reach actions only and not options, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; thus building a wall of separation between church and state. Congress thus inhibited from acts respecting religion, and the Executive authorized only to execute their acts, I have refrained from prescribing even occasional performances of devotion…”
“So what did Jefferson mean when he used the “wall” metaphor? Jefferson undoubtedly meant that the First Amendment prohibited the federal Congress from enacting any law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof… Jefferson believed that the Constitution created a limited government & that the states retained the authority over matters of religion not only through the 1st & also 10th Amendment.”
“The First Amendment clearly erected a barrier between the federal government and religion on a state level. If the state chose to have no religion or to have an established religion, the federal government has no jurisdiction one way or the other. This is what Jefferson meant by the “wall of separation.” In context, the word “state” really referred to the federal government. The 1st Amendment did not apply to the states.”…

The so-called Catholic vote usually produces a winner in presidential elections. The exception was in the year 2000 when a majority of Catholics in the country voted for Al Gore. However, thankfully a majority of Catholics in the state of Florida voted for George Bush. In 2008 the Catholic vote for Obama was 54%. If the President received 50% of the vote in 2012, he will be reelected. There is an interesting article in Insight Scoop: The Ignatius Press Blog – Fri. Nov. 18, 2011 – Michael Gerson thinks Obama’s ‘Catholic strategy is in shambles:’ I (Carl Olson) thinks he’s wrong.
Michael Gerson: “Now the conscience protections of Catholics are under assault, particularly by the Department of Health and Human Services. And Obama’s Catholic strategy is in shambles… Sebelius is becoming a political embarrassment at an inconvenient time. It will be significantly harder for Obama to repeat his appeal to Catholic voters while a part of his administration is at war with Catholic leaders and Catholic belief…”
Carl Olson: “Although not a Catholic, he (Obama) saw he could take up and tweak the playbook employed so successfully by the late Ted Kennedy and other “pro-choice Catholics”, who use the language of “social justice” and “choice” and “freedoms” and “privacy” to deflect from his core stances, which added up to the most pro-abortion platform ever held by a presidential candidate… Obama used and employed Catholics … Douglas Kmiec, who assured Catholics that Obama was almost as Catholic as the Pope, and Fr. Thomas Reese, who gave cover to Pres. Obama prior to 2009 visit to Notre Dame, come to mind. Toss in the entire staff of National Catholic Reporter for good measure.
Comments to Carl’s article: 1) Candidate Obama knew – and this is essential – that he could not win over serious, practicing, orthodox Catholics, but he also didn’t care, because he knew the majority of Catholics in the U.S. are not serious, practicing, orthodox Catholics. 2) The actual long-term “Catholic strategy” of this administration is to undermine and dismantle the witness and work of the Catholic Church.
3) And Obama has a lot of support for that by many self-hating Catholics, who own strategy is likewise to undermine and dismantle the witness and work of the actual Catholic Church and to reconstruct a church of their own making (just go over and read Commonweal, etc., where everything the Church (bishops, etc.) is bad and Obama is a better Catholic than they are.)
4) I doubt Obama even thinks in terms of “orthodox” Catholics… He seems himself as liberator, conservatives as trying to conserve ideas that keep “his people” down. Think of his radical white college prof mother. Mix in a late in life embrace of his black maleness, a dash of Jeremiah’s Wright, and that tells you all you need to know. For religion, think Katharine Jefferts Schori or Sister Joan C, with Biden think of Fr. James Martin after teaching at Georgetown for ten years. 5) This is an excellent analysis. You have hit the nail on the head. I think that the best thing that can happen to the Catholic Church in America will be for the Catholic Church to lose it’s free tax status. That would free up priests and bishops to preach real Catholic doctrine from the pulpit.
6) Sad to say, but this writer has it absolutely correct. The only thing he overlooks is the active involvement of so many ‘Catholic’ clergy (our own Jesuit pastor and his guest celebrants from Holy Cross) that preach Obamamism, the majority episcopate, who align themselves with &support pro-abortion “Catholics” like Shaheen, Pelosi, Biden … leftist priests who preach class-envy, racial hatred and socialism/Marxism- Chicago…"

“JustFaith sees many prominent social problems such as poverty, race, planetary care, war, and the death penalty through the lens of the Catholic faith. Its rhetoric sounds like something adapted from a Marxist handbook as its process groups meet weekly to discuss their textbooks, videos, listen to guest lectures and participate in active discussions of all aspects of the faith, especially those regarding the poor. Many faithful Catholics seem to have missed the point that JustFaith’s appeal to social justice is little more than an infusion of progressive social solutions and the political networking.
“In an interview in the St. Louis Review, Pat Dougherty of Catholic Charities was ecstatic about the new program, which he saw as a fascinating journey where he encountered the Gospel understanding of the wonderful rich Catholic tradition we have on social justice. With robotic precision, he boasted that JustFaith had challenged him to look and think about things differently and change the way he lived.
“Unsurprisingly, JustFaith has spread like wildflower to over three hundred areas in the U.S. with the tacit support of a growing number of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, many of whom were active in the civil rights movement in the 1960’s. Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan of Santa Fe made a spirited defense of the justifiable beleaguered “Catholic Campaign for Human Development” (CCHD) in his column in the archdiocese’s April 2010 issue of its monthly newspaper People of God.
“In the Valley of Jezreel: Jack Jezreel is the founder and director of JustFaith, which began in Louisville, Kentucky in 1989. From a biblical standpoint, Jezreel is a fascinating name. The Valley of Jezreel was where King Jehu had the apostate Queen Jezebel slain (2 Kings 9:1-10). It is also purported location of the Battle of Armageddon at the end of time.
“A professed Catholic who holds a master’s of divinity degree from Notre Dame University, Jesreel tells his interfaith audiences that he feels a special kinship with those committed to the poor and vulnerable, regardless of their religious background. His ecumenical notion of spirituality includes a dismissal of doctrinal truth in favor of common dedication to social work. Jezreel vaguely describes his goals as making the world a more hospital place and ending the cycle of failure for people of good will.
“Jezreel’s first principles is to establish a lasting relationship with the poor, rather than just writing a check or pulling a “celebrity parachute jump” into impoverished areas to dole out food for a day or two. He cites the lives of “saintly” people like Dorothy Day to illustrate his social message. Sounding more like a born-again Barack Obama, Jezreel sees the importance of building lasting change through community. JustFaith is his way to radically transform parishes, with all parishioners’ goods being held in what he called shared economics.
"He believes that the biggest obstacle to bringing justice to America is segregation of the poor, the oppressed, the exploited, and neglected from the well off. He sees America’s cities like little apartheids, leading the wealthy into a dangerous illusion of security & the poor into hopelessness. What Jezreel fails to mention is that this is usually the fault of liberal politicians who have controlled most major cities since the dawning of the Progressive era...

I had for more than a decade in the 1980’s distributed a Weekly Consumer Buyline in Long Beach. It taught all including the poor how to fish and shop for best buys and get out of poverty. I believe that poverty is something temporary in America. We are not to be enablers for poverty in one family from generation to generation.

A Communist a is master of deceit. I lived during the Cold War with Communist Russia. In North America, we had numerous Commie front organizations. Their members were called “useful idiots.” Today, we have the “useful idiots” for the Obama regime.
But wait, let’s have the progressive liberal TIME magazine share the good news in the Nov. 21st article, “The Return of the Rabble Rouser” - Under fire, Van Jones resigned the Obama Administration. But, he’s found a new cause: rallying liberal groups on behalf of the Occupy protesters.
“But with Jones’ participation, the protesters are now supported by a coalition of more than 70 liberal organizations - including MoveOn.org, several large labor unions and Planned Parenthood - provide resources and a more coordinated message. Tarps and zero-degree sleeping bags have flooded into squares through a website set up by Jones’ partners…”
“What are we doing with communists in the White House?” one outraged voter shouted at Rep. Chet Edwards, a Texan Democrat, at a town meeting hall last August. “He has the ear of the President!” … A year later, the Congressman lost his race for reelection by 25 points.” [Repeat this question over and over again for all voters in 2012!]
[But wait! Nancy Pelosi says, “Van Jones has made it his life’s work to speak the truth to power.” During the time of Bishop Fulton Sheen, it would have been unheard of for any U.S. political party to be associated with Communists. But we need to remember that Nancy is an absolutely phony fraud Catholic-in-name-only politician along with her dozen Democratic Catholic clones in California like Loretta and Linda Sanchez .]
The liberal progressive democratic mindset is intellectually bankrupt with ideas. They need a communist to inspire and guide them.

Again thanks to Claremont Institute’s booklet, 2004 - “The Rise and Fall of Constitutional Government in America” by Thomas G. West and Douglas A. Jeffrey for the following information.
“The framers of the Constitution designed American government to protect equal rights. A written Constitution, separation of powers, federalism and various public supports to morality were means to facilitate this goal. But as we have seen, over the past century, the goal of government has increasingly shifted to producing an equality of condition. Given this goal, one would expect new government arrangements and practices to follow. This occurred, resulting in the new welfare state.
“Constitutionalism Derailed: Institutions Transformed: As a matter of logic, the denial of human nature and rejection of natural rights undercut the very idea of constitutionalism – “the idea enshrined in the American founding by the existence of fundamental written law.” The purpose of constitutionalism is to limit the ordinary operation of government in order to protect equal rights.
“It becomes an impediment when the government seeks to subvert equal rights in the pursuit of other ends. As Woodrow Wilson put it: “Living political constitutions must be Darwinian in structure and practice.” They must be open to constant reinterpretation to allow government wide scope to accomplish its evolving goals. “Limited government, the legacy of the Founders, must be transformed into unlimited government.” As a practical matter, the separation of powers, the cornerstone of the Framers’ Constitution, has been effectively dismantled since the late 1960’s.
“Judiciary: … The job of the courts was to take the laws passed by Congress and the fundamental law of the Constitution and apply them to particular cases in which one party claims that another has done wrong. In the words of Chief Justice John Marshall, they were to be “servants of the law.” Under today’s “living constitution” the courts have taken on a new role of participating actively in the formation of public policy, in effect giving themselves a legislative and executive role.
“An example of legislating based on a pretense of interpreting the Constitution is Roe v. Wade; in 1973 Supreme Court decision striking down state laws restricting abortions. The justices clearly knew that there is not a right to abortion in the Constitution. They just did not care. “As Justice William Brennan said in 1986, the Framers’ Constitution belongs to a “world that is dead and gone,” and therefore their “values” do not apply to our world.” [FYI – William Brennan was a “Catholic-in-name only Person” and got away with murder.] … most judges care little about the original meaning of the Constitution in their constitutional jurisprudence…
“Examples of courts executing the law are takeovers by federal judges of local school districts (to implement busing to achieve racial balance) and state prison systems (to give prisoners more pleasant conditions)… In short, the courts no longer adjudicate the law, but legislate based on personal beliefs. Again thanks to Claremont Institute’s booklet, 2004 - “The Rise and Fall of Constitutional Government in America” by Thomas G. West and Douglas A. Jeffrey for the following information.
“The framers of the Constitution designed American government to protect equal rights. A written Constitution, separation of powers, federalism and various public supports to morality were means to facilitate this goal. But as we have seen, over the past century, the goal of government has increasingly shifted to producing an equality of condition. Given this goal, one would expect new government arrangements and practices to follow. This occurred, resulting in the new welfare state.
“Constitutionalism Derailed: Institutions Transformed: As a matter of logic, the denial of human nature and rejection of natural rights undercut the very idea of constitutionalism – “the idea enshrined in the American founding by the existence of fundamental written law.” The purpose of constitutionalism is to limit the ordinary operation of government in order to protect equal rights.
“It becomes an impediment when the government seeks to subvert equal rights in the pursuit of other ends. As Woodrow Wilson put it: “Living political constitutions must be Darwinian in structure and practice.” They must be open to constant reinterpretation to allow government wide scope to accomplish its evolving goals. “Limited government, the legacy of the Founders, must be transformed into unlimited government.” As a practical matter, the separation of powers, the cornerstone of the Framers’ Constitution, has been effectively dismantled since the late 1960’s.
“Judiciary: … The job of the courts was to take the laws passed by Congress and the fundamental law of the Constitution and apply them to particular cases in which one party claims that another has done wrong. In the words of Chief Justice John Marshall, they were to be “servants of the law.” Under today’s “living constitution” the courts have taken on a new role of participating actively in the formation of public policy, in effect giving themselves a legislative and executive role.
“An example of legislating based on a pretense of interpreting the Constitution is Roe v. Wade; in 1973 Supreme Court decision striking down state laws restricting abortions. The justices clearly knew that there is not a right to abortion in the Constitution. They just did not care. “As Justice William Brennan said in 1986, the Framers’ Constitution belongs to a “world that is dead and gone,” and therefore their “values” do not apply to our world.” [FYI – William Brennan was a “Catholic-in-name only Person” and got away with murder.] … most judges care little about the original meaning of the Constitution in their constitutional jurisprudence…
“Examples of courts executing the law are takeovers by federal judges of local school districts (to implement busing to achieve racial balance) and state prison systems (to give prisoners more pleasant conditions)… In short, the courts no longer adjudicate the law, but legislate based on personal beliefs. THEN: I concur with Thomas C. Reeves, the author of the book: “The Life and Times of Fulton Sheen (Encounter books, 2001) that Bishop Fulton Sheen was the most important Catholic of the 20th century America. Fulton had a great speaking voice and would work 19 hours daily, seven days a week.
In 1928, he went on “Catholic Hour” national broadcast. He was on for more than two decades. Vast quantities of letters and financial donations poured in on “Catholic Hour” officials whenever Sheen spoke. He was also a popular preacher during Lent and Holy Days.
Sheen’s TV talks, delivered in full regalia of a bishop were masterful. He worked each presentation for 35 hours. He was on television in the 1950s for one-half hour weekly in a “Life is Worth Living” series. He preached the gospel via television. Catholic EWTN still shows episodes of this magnificent series.
Some of Sheen’s talks and writings dealt with Communism, which the Bishop, a student of Marxism and a personal friend of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, thought a threat to the nation and the world.
NOW: the mindset of the leftists and democrats is intellectually and morally bankrupt. They are allowing a certified Communist Van Jones to agitate, inspire and direct “Occupy Wall Street” protests. Ref. Time Magazine, Nov. 21, 2011, “The Return of the Rabble Rouser.” Instead of the teacher brainwashed protesters at Occupy Wall Street I want the misguided teachers themselves to be there. That same year, songwriter Bob Dylan wrote the lyrics to “Blowing in the Wind,” which was a paean to the Civil Rights movement that was blowing across the American social landscape. Since then both powerful winds have emerged to create a prevailing weather system that has penetrated the deep corridors in America with tornado force.
“The Winds of Change: With the Church’s open windows, many innovative and unique programs have substantially changed the face of the Church. Among the sex education courses, centering prayer groups, and the like, is Just Faith which has an activist pedigree that dates back to the Social Gospel of the late 19th century.
“The Social Gospel was a Protestant intellectual movement during the early 20th century that applied Christian ethics to social problems, especially inequality, alcohol, crime, racial tensions, poverty, child labor, and labor unions. The leaders of the Social Gospel were predominantly associated with the Progressive Movement. In true utopian fashion they sought to institutionalize the words of the Lord’s Prayer, thy will be done on earth. The Second Coming could not happen until mankind had cleansed the world of its social evils.
“The founder of the Social Gospel Movement was Walter Rauschenbusch. In his priorities, religion took second place to his socialism. Faith was primarily a convenient tool with which he could make socialism a permanent fixture on the cultural landscape.
“A Faith Journey: A closer look at JustFaith indicates that it is more like a Social Gospel than it is Christianity. Today, millions of children have been slaughtered by abortion. Thousands of women have become sterile.
“Chapter 28, verse 19, states that we will no longer have security if we reject God… Verse 20 states that we will experience confusion if we reject God… Verses 21, 27-28 and 60-61 paint a startling picture regarding incurable diseases. The Lord will plague you with diseases until He has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess… Today, we are clueless as to the cures for many diseases…
“A nation that rejects God will be a debtor nation… However, if we reject God and do not follow His commandments, then verses 15-68 describe our ultimate demise.”

For decades the American people have had to put up with a two-faced, double standard, culture of death slanted U.S. Mainstream Media. They support the progressive leftist agenda also called political correctness. They promote the reelection of President Barrack Obama.
They are the ones that called Tea Party supporters racists. When their candidate Obama is in trouble they are able to create new talking points. For example, this week it is about voters going to polls and having the proper identification. If it is too strict then it is identified as racist. Progressives often use the word racist when attacking their opponents. It is part of their mindset. They hate traditional America. Normal Americans experience this all the time. For example:
Just think of the life, marriage and family issues where supporters were ignored, denigrated and ridiculed. After all, we are just uninformed, dumb and old-fashioned. Likewise teachers who believed in the 1960s and 1970s that legalized unionism in public education were destructive to the independence and integrity of the public school teacher.
You pay for your political and social agenda and I will pay for mine but don’t force me to pay for your agenda as condition for my employment in this school district. Independent-minded teachers were given by the media no airing of the conservative position In California. Today, the teacher’s yearly pay-off to unions is $1000.00. During the Proposition 8 campaign the teacher unions contribute monies to defeat Proposition 8. Their mantra is: if you are not for same-sex marriage you are a racist and bigot. This is relativistic hogwash.
Among the lefties who do you think is the most dangerous public figure in America? It is a Black conservative with traditional values. Herman Cain is that man. The progressives a.k.a lefties, liberals, Democrats will do everything possible to smear and destroy that man’s character. If they had applied that same standard to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton both of these politicians would be out of office. Jesse and Al remain because they are promoters of the progressive liberal democratic agenda.
No politician is a saint. But the culture of death needs to put Black Conservative Americans in their place. Why? Black conservative Americans bring new ideas into solving social and political problems. That cannot be allowed. For progressive democrats to win in elections they need 90% of the black vote and in 2012 presidential election that is absolutely necessary.
Nevertheless, here is a CNN polling report. White Americans against Obama 61% to 37%. Among the non-white Obama’s support is 2 to 1. Independents opposed to Obama are 54% to 42%. We know that Herman Cain muffed up on an interview with respect to Libya. He will make other mistakes. But Herman Cain is the best thing for Black America and the nation as a whole.
Everything possible must be done by pro-life to either elect him as President or Vice-President. Be aware that Black Americans voted for marriage in California by 70%. But they were not allowed to vote in Washington, D.C. Progressivism is a destructive anti-traditional American philosophy of government.

The host of the CBS program asked Cain about comments he made in January saying he opposes the racist agenda of “PLANNED PARENTHOOD” the nation’s biggest abortion business.
“I absolutely would defund Planned Parenthood – not because I don’t believe in planning parenthood, [but because] Planned Parenthood as an organization is an absolute farce on the American people,” he said then. “People who know the history of Margaret Sanger, who started Planned Parenthood, they know that the intention was not to help young women who get pregnant to plan their parenthood. No – it was a sham to be able to kill black babies.”
In the new interview, Cain says, “I still stand by that. If people go back and look at the history and look at Margaret Sanger’s own words, that’s exactly where that came from What I am saying is , Planned Parenthood isn’t sincere about wanting to try to counsel them not to have abortions.”
“Seventy-five percent of those facilities were built in the black community. In Margaret Sanger’s own words she didn’t use the word ‘genocide’ but she did talk about preventing the increasing number of poor blacks in this country by preventing black babies from being born,” Cain told the program…

“Are you for some sort of pro-life amendment to the constitution that in essence would trump Roe v. Wade?” Brody asks. “Yes. Yes I feel that strongly about it. If we can get the necessary support and it comes to my desk I’ll sign it. That’s all I can do. I will sign it,” Cain responds… “I believe that the office of the presidency and the bully pulpit should be used for that because I happen to believe that we have many instances where if you appeal to the people’s hearts you can change their minds. I had the experience of visiting a facility in Houston, Texas not too long ago. It was a women’s facility … they work with ladies who have gotten pregnant and they think they want an abortion. .. They introduced me to a young lady who had decided not to have an abortion, and see that pretty baby there… you have to show them the beauty of not aborting a life.

“Originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years: Construction began on the present site in 1724. In 1793, Spanish officials secularized San Antonio’s five missions and distributed their lands to the remaining Indian residents.
“In early 1800s, the Spanish military stationed a cavalry unit at the former mission. The soldiers referred to the old mission as the Alamo (the Spanish word for “cottonwood”) in honor of their home town Alamo de Parras, Coahuila. The post’s commander established the first recorded hospital in Texas in the Long Barrack.
“The Alamo was home to both Revolutionaries and Royalist during Mexico’s ten year struggle for independence. The military – Spanish, Rebel, and then Mexican – continued to occupy the Alamo until the Texas Revolution.
“San Antonio and the Alamo played a critical role in the Texas Revolution… On February 23, 1836, the arrival of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana’s army outside of San Antonio nearly caught them by surprise… The defenders held out for 13 days against Santa Ana’s army. [6,000] … Colonel William B. Travis, the commander of the Alamo drew a line on the ground and asked any man willing to stay and fight to step over – all except one did. Among the Alamo’s garrison were Jim Bowie, the renowned knife fighter, and David Crockett, the famed frontiersman and former congressman from Tennessee.
“The final assault came before daybreak on the morning of March 6, 1836, as columns of Mexican soldiers emerged from the predawn darkness and headed for the Alamo’s walls.”
Daniel Cloud from Kentucky while on route to San Antonio wrote on Dec. 26, 1835 “If we succeed the Country is ours. It is immense in extent and fertile in its soil and will amply reward all our toil. If we fail, death in the cause of liberty and humanity is not cause for shuddering. Our rifles are by our side, and choice guns they are, and we know what awaits us, and are prepared to meet it.”

At the Alamo, the survivors were 14 women and children. 189 men lay dead. General Santa Ana burned their bodies. About 25 of the dead came from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany , and Denmark. The others came from TX, VA, NC, KY, AR, MO, PA, AL, NY, GA, MS, NY, TN, OH, LA, CT, NC, NJ, AR, SC, RI and MA. What we have is American Exceptionalism. “Remember The Alamo!”

Instead of jobs, they have put 48 million Americans on food stamps; they have encouraged envy and class warfare; and in the name of the poor hate the rich; in name of our well being and cost maintenance, health czars intrude in our lives; they have subverted the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, specifically Amendment 1, etc.

Lori, Bishop of Bridgeport, On behalf of the United Conference of Catholic Bishops – Before the Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives, Subcommittee on the Constitution, Oct. 26, 2011.This testimony will be discussed in future letters. Here are excerpts of the Introduction and the 3 parts to the testimony.
“I am here today representing the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)… and as the newly appointed Chair of the USCCB’s Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.”
1…”Religious liberty is not merely one right among others, but enjoys a certain primacy. As the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI recently explained: “It is indeed the first of human rights, not only because it was historically the first to be recognized but also because it touches the constitutive dimension of man, his relationship with his creator.”.. .
Religious liberty is also prior to the state itself. It is not merely a privilege that the government grants us and so may take away at will… The Declaration of Independence boldly proclaimed as a self-evident truth that our inalienable rights are “endowed by our Creator” – not by the State… Finally, the Church teaches that these rights of religious freedom – prior to all other rights and even to the State, and protecting both individuals and institutions – are held not just by Catholics, but by all people, by virtue of their common humanity.”
2…”this great national legacy of religious liberty … has been subject to ever more frequent assault and ever more rapid erosion… a) In August, the U.S. Department of Health and Services (HHS) issued regulations to mandate the coverage of contraceptives (including abortifacients) and sterilization a “preventive services” in almost all private health insurance plans… b) In May, … USCCB’s Migration and Refugee Services (MRS), will be barred from participating in the program because they cannot in conscience provide the “full range” of reproductive services – namely, abortion and contraception…
c) The State Department’s Agency for International Development (USAID) is increasingly requiring contractors, such as Catholic Relief Services (CRS), to provide comprehensive HIV prevention activities (including condom distribution) … to treat AIDS in Africa… d) The federal Department of Justice (DoJ) has ratcheted up its attack on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) BY MISCHARACTERIZING IT AS AN ACT OF BIGOTRY… But in July, the Department started filing briefs actively attacking DOMA’s constitutionality, claiming that supporters … have been motivated by bias and prejudice…
e)DoJ has also undermined religious liberty in the critically important “ministerial exception” case now pending before the Supreme Court, Hosanna Tabor v. EEOC. f) In New York, county clerks face legal action for refusing to participate in same-sex unions… In Illinois, Catholic Charities has been driven out of the adoption and foster care business, because it recognizes the unique value of man-woman marriage or the well-being of children.”
3. … “There are three important bipartisan bills currently in the Congress: the Protect Life Act (H.R. 358), the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 361) and the Respect Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179). All three go a long way towards guaranteeing religious liberty and freedom of conscience for the religious employers, health insurers, and health care providers.”

Thanks to Suzanne Field’s Townhall.com’s article 6/10/2011, “David Mamet Turns Right”. David is a screenwriter, movie director and sometime essayist. He is a convert to conservatism and common sense. Mamet writes of his conversion to free market economics, his discovery of the errors of multiculturalism, in a new book titled, “THE SECRET KNOWLEDGE: ON THE DISMANTLING OF AMERICAN CULTURE.”
“No longer, he declares, is he a “brain-dead liberal.” Sometime after arriving in Hollywood, of all places, and at 60, he engaged in a conversation with his Republican rabbi (where did he find one?), who gave him the books of conservative writers, such as Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Milton Friedman and Paul Johnson. He had a dramatic political conversion.
“Mamet re-evaluated his own heroes, starting with the playwright Bertolt Brecht, whom he now describes as “a show dog of communism,” who theatrically criticized capitalism even as his royalties allowed him to live comfortably on capital deposited in a Swiss bank account. Karl Marx, he discovered, never earned his money, but mooched on Friedrich Engels’ family, which may account for his ideas about how wealth should be distributed.
“The great wickedness of Liberalism,” Mamet discovered, “was that those who devise the ever-new state Utopias … set out to bankrupt and restrict not themselves, but others.”
“Mamet first observes his own hypocrisy, recognizing the disconnect between how he acted and how he talked, “talking Left and living Right,” which leads him to a collective indictment of himself and others in his generation of baby boomers, whose ideology has never quite been in sync with the real world they inhabit.
“As my generation did not live through the Depression, World War II and the agony of the immigrants who are our grandparents or great-grandparents: as we were raised in the greatest plenty the world has ever known and in the most just of societies,” he writes, “we have grown lazy and entitled (not unlike Marx, who lived as a parasite upon Engels, and never worked a day in his life).”
“In this scenario, liberals replace the Judeo-Christian roots of democracy with wishful Utopian thinking, belief in man in the abstract rather than the flawed human being that he is : “We are told we need not produce, but may merely hope, we need not defend, but may hope, we must not consume, but are allowed, somehow, to hope for sustenance, magically, deriving from some unspecified actions of a government, which, all observe, is at best competent, and, more usually, self-serving and corrupt, whoever is in power.”
“The title of Mamet’s book is meant as ironic … there is no secret knowledge, except the recognition that the federal government in its expanding power is “the zoning board write large.” Mamet’s new-found hero is Friedrich Hayek, who observed that man is limited and government should be also... He passionately defends patriotism, tradition, the family (rather than the diluted “family values”) and the Bible. [He is a traditionalist.]
