Fulton Sheen - Then and Now

Bishop Fulton Sheen – Then and Now

THEN: I concur with Thomas C. Reeves, the author of the book: “The Life and Times of Fulton Sheen (Encounter books, 2001) that Bishop Fulton Sheen was the most important Catholic of the 20th century America. Fulton had a great speaking voice and would work 19 hours daily, seven days a week.

In 1928, he went on “Catholic Hour” national broadcast. He was on for more than two decades. Vast quantities of letters and financial donations poured in on “Catholic Hour” officials whenever Sheen spoke. He was also a popular preacher during Lent and Holy Days.

Sheen’s TV talks, delivered in full regalia of a bishop were masterful. He worked each presentation for 35 hours. He was on television in the 1950s for one-half hour weekly in a “Life is Worth Living” series. He preached the gospel via television. Catholic EWTN still shows episodes of this magnificent series.

Some of Sheen’s talks and writings dealt with Communism, which the Bishop, a student of Marxism and a personal friend of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, thought a threat to the nation and the world.

NOW: the mindset of the leftists and democrats is intellectually and morally bankrupt. They are allowing a certified Communist Van Jones to agitate, inspire and direct “Occupy Wall Street” protests. Ref. Time Magazine, Nov. 21, 2011, “The Return of the Rabble Rouser.” Instead of the teacher brainwashed protesters at Occupy Wall Street I want the misguided teachers themselves to be there. Ask them questions and they will respond as fools for Karl Marx and socialism. Education is bankrupt.

Sheen spent an hour of prayer daily before the Eucharist. At 84 years, he died in his chapel before the Blessed Sacrament on Dec. 9, 1979. Bishop Fulton Sheen is a super role model for religious and laity.

NOW: Today, we have a completely different America. Why? We needed leadership and we didn’t have a bishop Fulton Sheen or any other Catholic Lay leader to speak out Catholic beliefs during this past generation. We had no American equivalent of Blessed Pope John Paul II. Bishop Fulton Sheen would have been that equivalent. Let’s have Sheen’s TV talks on a special ETWN all day event.

In Blessed Pope John Paul II terminology the culture of death values has taken over in America. For example, they seek to legalize same-sex marriage. And if you still believe that marriage is between a man and woman, you are smeared as being a racist and a bigot.

For Catholic hospitals, the conscience clause for doctors and health care workers is threatened and legally will be eliminated. That is why THE TESTIMONY ON RELIGIOUS LIBERTY by Bishop William E. Lori to the committee of U.S. House of Representatives, Subcommittee on the Constitution, Oct. 26, 2011 is so important to all Christians especially Catholics and members of the Knights of Columbus.

Find out who votes against the three bipartisan bills – 1) the Protect Life Act (H.R. 358), 2) the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 361) and 3) the Respect Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179).

George H. Kubeck, Chrystal Cathedral is in the news. There is a statue of Fulton Sheen at the Visitors Center.
