PADRE PIO - THE TRUE STORY BY BERNARD RUFFIN
Chapter 23 - Padre Pio and the GI's p. 262-269
"Father St. John noted that, during the Mass, Padre Pio "seemed to be in ecstasy. At the Consecration, holding the Host up, he seemed to be out of this world. He seemed not to know where he was. His eyes were aglow." But the length of the Mass led him to ask Padre Pio,"Since the rule is that the Mass lasts no longer than an hour, how can you say a two-hour Mass?" As with the Jesuit's other questions concerning unorthodox practices, Pio replied, "I have permission."...
The recollections of Father Saint John of Padre Pio were of "a happy man." He had a nice chuckle. He was a holy, prayerful man, who spent most his time in the confessional. He had bright eyes and nice smile. He was a gentle person. He never raised his voice and had mild, controlled gestures. He spoke a few English words. He walked normally. He did not limp. He had a very dignified walk ... I smelled the perfume when I kissed the wounds. It was very mind. It was a pleasant odor. It was no big deal. It could have been shaving location. That's what it smelled like...."
Father Saint John was convinced, from two episodes just described that Padre Pio was gifted perscrutatio cordium, or the ability to read hearts.... Father Duggan asked about the future of the United States and the Soviet Union, and Padre Pio told him, "The Russian people will be converted. Their total conversion will happen very fast. The conversion of United States will be slow, but sure." ... After Mass, Joe Asteritsa went to make his confession. When he returned, "his eyes were big as saucers" as he declared, "I hardly had a chance to open my mouth and Padre Pio said, "Giusep, you did this and this and this'- right down to the letter of what I did was wrong!"...
Fanning remembered Padre Pio ... most striking characteristic his "penetrating eyes, which "looked as if he were reading you."... At table, Fanning recalled that Padre Pio "ate what he was served, but very little." ... that the Capuchin was "always in the presence of God, one way or another. He was aware of God's presence in an extraordinary way."...
As might be imagined, frequently Padre Pio's young visitors inquired about their future, Father Duggan brought not only soldiers but also seminarians from Rome. One of them named Mark, had an interview with Padre Pio who advised him to leave the seminary (which he did.Duggan asked the Capuchin about several devout women in uniform, who wondered whether they should nuns, and received the reply, "Let him get married" (which he did)....
Father Duggan remembers that there were many Episcopalians and Presbyterians who attended his Mass, including at least one chaplain. Even Duggan was a little concerned. "Is there any chance of their becoming Catholic?" he asked Pio, who seemed untroubled and said, "If they intend to convert, the Lord will show a way." Padre Pio "was friendly with all of them' and never pressed anyone to convert."...
The war finally came to an end in the summer of 1945 and, during the next few months, the Americans and the British returned to their home. But San Giovanni was never the same. These men and women took the word of Padre Pio to their homes throughout the United States and the British Empire, and, as soon as passenger service was reestablished in the sea and air lanes of the world, a growing flood of pilgrims from every corner of the earth poured into San Giovanni Rotondo, for Padre Pio now had a mission to the world."
George H. Kubeck
"Padre Alberto likened him to an apostle "sent by God to stem the tide of evil of people and to lead souls along the way to Christ." Pray for Padre Pio's intercession in this year's presidential election.
