David Carlin was watching the Democratic National Convention on TV, for countless hours a week ago, and it was a painful experience for somebody like him, a pro-life Democrat. (Guest Column – Our Sunday Visitor, Aug. 15, 2004.)

My party is hiding its radical anti-Christian agenda behind the mask of old-style-liberalism.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should place pro-life Democrats on the endangered-species list…. Our prospects for survival are worse than those of the American bald eagle.

I hate to admit it, but the national Democratic Party is strongly and decidedly pro-abortion, and so are the party’s candidates for president and vice-president, Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and John Edwards (D-N.C.)….

To judge from the sentiments expressed on television, You would think the Democratic Party is still the good old party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson- that is pro-labor, pro-racial equality, and strong on national defense. No mention was made that today’s Democratic Party is the party of abortion and increasingly the party of same-sex marriage, and because they believe in a strong national defense. In other words, the Democrats put on the mask because they want to win the election.

{Thankfully, Catholics in 2004 perceived the mask and voted for George Bush- 52% - 48%. In 2008 the Democrats used the mask of Barack Obama and succeeded – 54% to 46% ghk}

Unfortunate, the old Democratic coalition, the one that flourished from about 1932 to 1968, no longer exists. The labor unions and the leading African-American organizations are still Democrats, true.

But the party has been hijacked by a newer group – affluent secularists. These people have good education, good jobs, and LOTS OF MONEY. {OBAMA SPENT 240 MILLION DOLLARS MORE THAN McCAIN TO WIN THE 2008 PRESIDENCY. ghk}

THEY HAVE LITTLE OR NO RELIGIOUS BELIEF, AND THEY HAVE A POOR OPINION OF CHRISTIANS OF THE OLD-FASHIONED KIND, THAT IS, ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS AND CONSERVATIVE PROTESTANTS. (THEY ESPECIALLY, DISDAIN CONSERVATIVE PROTESTANTS FROM THE SOUTH.
MOREOVER, THEY WANT TO REPLACE TRADITIONAL CHRISTIAN MORALITY WITH A NEW MORALITY THAT MAXIMIZES PERSONAL LIBERTY AND TOLERANCE – A “DO YOUR OWN THING” MORALITY. THIS WHY THEY ARE STRONGLY SUPPORTIVE OF ABORTION AND SAME-SEX MARRIAGE. …

I am sometimes asked by my fellow Catholics how can I remain a Democrat. Frankly, it isn’t easy, and the dishonest convention in Boston (2004) didn’t make it an easier. Three reasons: (1) From childhood I have never liked the Republican Party; (2) in my home state (R.I.) many (probably most) Democrats are pro-life; and I think I serve the pro-life cause by keeping the pro-life flag in the Democratic Party. {Tragically, Carlin, it is not working out very well. WE NEED LEADERS IN THE NORTHEAST. CALL YOURSELVES – DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS. GHK}
