Catholic Social Studies Principles - 1

Catholic Social Studies Principles – 1
cinops be gone Monday, June 30, 2008

Working together: the pro-life and peace and justice advocates:

The Seven Principles are:
1.) The Right to Life and the Dignity of the Human Person: 2.) Call to Family, Community, and Participation: 3.) Rights and Responsibilities: 4.) Option for the poor and vulnerable: 5.) Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers: 6.) Solidarity: 7.) Caring for God’s Creation:

First of all, the Catholic social justice activists are all in the same boat. However, the secular culture has a mindset different from ours; particularly to the first three principles which pro-life activists mainly focus on. Pro-life is shut out completely by the elite. They report and persuade the community with the news of what Pope John Paul II coined the culture of death agenda. And what is it? It is not only abortion on demand, but the acceptance of same-sex marriage, assisted suicide, euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research. The Catholic Church teaches that these are intrinsically and absolutely evil. They are not prudential issues in which Catholics can argue about and disagree on.

On the other hand, peace and justice advocates are strongly concerned with the options for the poor, dignity of work and rights of workers, solidarity and caring for God’s creation. There is not only the Detention Ministry, Feeding of the Poor, Shelter for the Homeless, S.O.S, (Sharing ourselves), but dozens other ministries in each diocese of the United States. We all choose to be involved in various ministries. Almost all of these are prudential issues.

The problem we have is: should we support Catholic politicians who do well with the peace and justice issues but drive pro-life, marriage and family activists up the wall with their support directly and indirectly of abortion on demand, same-sex marriage and embryonic stem cell research?

Two years ago in Canada, Catholic-in-name only politicians (Liberals) passed the same-sex marriage laws. This is unbelievable but it happened and they got away with it and with murder because they also promoted abortion and embryonic stem cell research. I believe the CINOP (Catholic-in-name-only politician) will do the same in the U.S.A. He is destructive not only to the Catholic Church and our faith but also to the nation.

Just to give you an example of a Republican Catholic-in-name-only politician:
In an interview Sunday morning on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called a ballot measure to ban gay marriage in the state “a waste of time.” “I personally believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman,” Schwarzenegger said. But at the same time I think that my, you know belief, I don’t want to force on anyone else.” OC Register, June 30, 2008 - p. 14

In closing, we need to work together & vote out of office any Catholic-in-name-only politician in this coming election in any diocese throughout the country.

Call Yourself a Catholic! - 1

Call Yourself a Catholic! – 1
cinops be gone Feast of St. Peter and Paul Sunday, June 29, 2008

You can’t call yourself a Catholic if you are for fornication, adultery and pornography. You can’t call yourself a Catholic if you are voting for a candidate and a political party that is for abortion, same-sex marriage and embryonic stem cell research. Why? All of the above positions are absolutely and intrinsically evil. These are not prudential issues upon which Catholics or other Christians can disagree on; example immigration, health care, taxes, social security, and high gas prices etc. The top party positions are evil and will destroy the country.
Your vote is about who is going to be on the Supreme Court and the kind of America that you will hand over to your children and grandchildren.

Also, as a Catholic if you are undecided about Proposition 8 on the ballot in California that marriage is between a man and woman. Marriage is a do or die issue for America. America with same-sex marriage is not America anymore. It is a different country. Check out what is happening in Canada and where Catholic-in-name-only politicians called Liberals foisted same-sex marriage on Canada two years ago. The CINOP is a dangerous politician & needs to be voted out of office.

For heavens sake, vote them out! Check out the Catechism of the Catholic Church and what all the Saints and what the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have written about marriage. After all, you are destined with God’s grace to be a saint. The Church has such a rich heritage of information on family, marriage and children. The family is a miniature church.

The marriage amendment is also on the ballot in Florida and possibly in Arizona. It is the national issue for values voters and any other voter in this presidential election. Symbolically, it is also on the ballot in Iowa and Massachusetts in these two states, it was blocked by politicians of the party of abortion, same-sex marriage and embryonic-stem cell research.

CINOP Nancy Pelosi is the one who is promoting San Francisco values on the rest of the country besides California. She blocked the marriage amendment from being on the Massachusetts ballot this November because it would hurt the presidential candidate of the party of abortion, same-sex marriage and embryonic stem cell research.

In fact in Massachusetts, the marriage amendment was blocked by CINOP Nancy Pelosi and Catholic-in-name-only politicians. And because some of the politicians were members of the Knights of Columbus, it is our duty to correct that shame and work 110% for the passage of the Marriage Amendment Proposition 8.

The Hottest Places in Hell are reserved for those who remain neutral during a moral crisis: Maybe the Liturgy of the Hours can provide us with some answers and motivation. Today is the Feast of St. Peter and Paul.
Also, we have Pope Benedict XVI announcement that the Church would celebrate a special Jubilee Year to the Apostle Paul from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009 on the occasion of the bimillennium of Saint Paul’s birth. In his footsteps, let’s go out there!

Random Observations - 1

Random Observations - 1
cinops be gone Saturday, June 28, 2008
It may be a good idea for you and me to have a kind of casual conversation between today and the presidential election in Nov. 2008.

1.) For example, there is a news story that the controversial Catholic priest Rev. Michael Pfleger has returned to the pulpit. He has been at a predominately black Church in Chicago since 1981. Rev. Pfleger has been described as “extremely Afro-centric and has called the former pastor at Trinity Church, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a “friend, mentor and a hero.” {It’s all about radical left-wing black liberation theology. There is also white and Spanish liberation theology. It is not unusual to be indoctrinated and brainwashed by this religious ideology.} Rev. Pfleger is on the Obama’s National Catholic Advisory Council.

I think Cardinal George made a wise decision. After two weeks, this misguided priest is full of abundant energy. Whenever he opens his mouth, it will be an education for Catholics and other Christians throughout the country not vote for Obama and the Catholic-in-name-only politicians.

2.) In this presidential election cycle the party of abortion and same-sex marriage is trying to appeal to values voters. I read in the Economist – June 7th, 2008, 46, how cleverly they have succeeded. Seven out of ten Americans routinely tell pollsters that they want their president to have a strong personal faith.

The Democrats sensibly (if cynically) set about closing the God gap. The party ran candidates with impeccable religious credentials {and got them elected} – Ted Strickland, former Methodist minister, in Ohio; Tim Kaine, a former missionary, in Virginia; and Robert Casey, a pro-life Catholic, {?} in Pennsylvania. The Democratic National Committee also hired a new species of political professionals – “religious outreach specialists.”

The leading Democratic candidates all talked about God with a gusto that had once been reserved for the Republicans….

But none of them talked about God as well as Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama had a great conversion story to tell – he was the child of agnostic parents who had “felt God’s spirit beckoning me” as a young man & had been baptized at the age of 26..

Mr. Obama may have also have problems with Catholic voters – a group that has been one of the most important swing votes in America since Ronald Reagan and that is over-represented in almost all the swing states…. Mrs. Clinton won 72% of the votes of white Catholics {Democrats} in the Pennsylvania primary…. Only 59% of Catholic Democrats, compared with 70% Protestants, said that they would vote Democratic in November if Mr. Obama were the nominee….

3.) … and those interested in forming their individual consciences as Catholics. The Office of Respect Life, Justice and Peace of the Diocese of Orange, in collaboration with the Diocesan Institute for Pastoral Ministry (IPM) invites you to a free workshop on the US Bishops’ document:

Thank God for Dr. James Dobson!

Thank God for Dr. James Dobson
cinops be gone Thursday, June 26, 2008
He is one of my heroes. I wish we had a Catholic religious or lay person speaking on talk radio like him with his strong support of the family, the unborn and marriage. Focus on the family is the outstanding religious program on the air waves. In Southern California you can hear him daily {M-F, possibly other hours on weekends} at 7:30 AM at 99.5 FM, 9 AM on 740 AM, and 10 PM on 99.5 FM radio.

Within the past week, Dr. Dobson accused presidential candidate Obama of “distorting the Bible.” Here is what Obama said: (newmax.com, Mon. June 23/08)

“Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the U.S.A., whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?” “Would we go with James Dobson’s or Al Sharpton’s?” referring to the civil rights leader.
Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy – chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, “a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application.”
“Folks haven’t been reading their Bibles.” Obama said.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament. Dobson said

“I THINK HE’S DELIBERATELY DISTORTING THE TRADITIONAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE BIBLE TO FIT HIS OWN WORLDVIEW, HIS OWN CONFUSED THEOLOGY,”
“ … HE IS DRAGGING BIBLICAL UNDERSTANDING THRU THE GUTTER.”…
Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama’s argument that the religious motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion’s term but in arguments accessible to all people.
HE SAID OBAMA. WHO SUPPORTS ABORTION RIGHTS, IS TRYING TO GOVERN BY THE “LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR OF MORALITY.” LABELING IT “A FRUITCAKE INTERPRETATION OF THE CONSTITUTION.”

“Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?” Dobson said. “What he’s trying to say here is unless everybody agrees; we have no right to fight for what we believe.”…

And now from http://newsmax.com – Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Dobson then unleashed this broadside against Obama: “What terrifies me is the thought that he might be our president … might be in the Oval Office … might be the leader of the free world … might be the commander in chief – because as I said a minute ago, the man is dangerous, especially in regard to this issue of morality. I can’t tell you how strongly I feel about this.

“He’s saying that my morality has to conform to his because we all have to agree or else it’s not democratic. Do you remember the position that he’s taken on the Born Alive Protection Act that was passed in Congress in 2002? It kept medical people who were unsuccessful in killing an unborn baby – they took their best shot at {the baby} and {the baby} managed to limp into the world – and so Congress said if he comes out alive you can’t murder him.

“That came to the fore of the state of Illinois legislature, and the only person to oppose it was Barack Obama and he was chairman of the committee, and got up and spoke in opposition to it. {He said} ‘We’re saying that a person is entititled to the kinds of protections provided to a child – a 9 month old child delivered to term – it would essentially bar abortions because the Equal Protection clause {that he was opposed to} does not allow somebody to kill a child.’ “This man believes, {that it’s acceptable} to kill children that you don’t want or need…” You decide.

Obama Catholic Advisor Censured

No sooner had Barack Obama’s Catholic Advisory Council written to Bill Donohue than Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann censured one of Obama’s National Co-Chairs, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
The Archbishop stated that the governor should not present herself for Holy Communion due to her long time support of abortion rights. Gov. Sebelius’ support for abortion can be seen in her recent veto of the Comprehensive Abortion Reform Act, which indicated “the governor does not approve of legislators devoting energy to protecting children and women by making it possible to enforce existing Kansas law regarding late-term abortions.”
It is telling that the presidential hopeful chose Gov. Sebelius to advise him on matters Catholic. For him to choose a Catholic politician who so disregards the Church’s respect for life speaks volumes about his intentions for this council. P. 7
===================================================================
My Catholic Straight Talk Express Comments:

What we have with Obama’s ‘Catholic Advisory Council’ is really a false Catholic religion. Particularly when the agenda of Obama’s party also includes besides abortion, the intrinsically evil principles of assisted suicide, euthanasia, same sex-marriage and embryonic stem cell research. The truth hurts.

It is not the fault of Obama. His presidency will seek support from any religious group. I read this morning where he recently met with religious leaders, including conservative evangelicals. His campaign also plans thousands of “American Values House Parties,” where participants discuss Obama and religion, as well as a presence on Christian radio and blogs. All participants will undoubtedly be given pink glasses and hearing aids. Americans are not stupid.

It was Pope John Paul II who coined the phrase “culture of death.” He dealt with the communist culture of death in Poland successfully; and we have our secular one in America. Lay informed Catholic Americans are in solidarity with popes John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI in evangelizing America. It would be a good idea to reread the encyclicals, The Gospel of Life and The Splendor of Truth.

Just as there were fellow travelers of the Communist regime in Poland, we have in America fellow travelers (Catholic-in-name-only politicians); sycophants to the secular culture of death agenda in America. The CINOP is an albatross around the Catholic Church’s neck. Vote all of them out of office. Good riddance!

DONOHUE’S REPLY

“The reason I mentioned only public officials who are of Sen. Obama’s Catholic National Advisory Council is the same reason I chose just three public policy issues: voting tallies are available on these advisors (but not on the others) and on these three issues. If I knew more about the others, no doubt some would have made the cut.
“It is more than embarrassing – it is shocking – to read how these Catholics view abortion. The Catholic Church regards abortion, as well as embryonic stem cell research, as “intrinsically evil.” But not these folks. For them abortion is ‘a profound moral issue.’
“Sadly” it has been apparent for years that many who fancy themselves ‘progressive’ Catholics do not treat abortion the way they do racial discrimination. No one in his right mind says that the best way to combat racial discrimination is by changing people’s hearts and minds, not the law. Which is why we do both. But when it comes to abortion- including partial-birth abortion – the progressives settle for dialogue.
“It is so nice to know that Obama thinks abortion ‘presents a profound moral challenge.’ Is infanticide another ‘profound moral challenge’? To wit: When he was in the Illinois state senate he led the fight to deny health care to babies born alive who survived an abortion. That, my friends, is not a moral challenge – it’s a Hitlerian decision.” P. 7 continues tomorrow.

Obama's Catholic Advisors - 3

Obama’s Catholic Advisors – 3
cinops be gone Saturday, June 21, 2008
Here is the text of Obama’s National Catholic Advisory Council’s letter to Bill Donahue, President of Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights:
“Dear Mr. Donohue:
We write in our individual capacities and not on behalf of the campaign. Last week you labeled many of our friends and some of us, as “Catholic dissidents” because we support Senator Obama.
Unlike the Catholic League, the U.S. Bishops advise careful consideration of candidates’ positions on a broad set of issues. While abortion and other life issues are of fundamental concern, the bishops teach that particular issues must not be misused “as a way of dismissing or ignoring other serious threats to human life and dignity” such as “racism and other unjust discrimination, the use of the death penalty, resorting to unjust war, the use of torture, war crimes, the failure to respond to those who are suffering from hunger or a lack of health care or an unjust immigration policy” (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, # 29). Our bishops go on to point out that “these are not optional concerns which can be dismissed.”
Across these issues Senator Obama offers much to the well-informed conscience, which helps explain why many Catholics are supporting him.
As Catholics, we view abortion as a profound moral issue. But what have nearly three decades of Republican promises to end abortion accomplished? Other aspects of the conservative Republican agenda have been carried out with fervor, such as weakening of the social-safety net, privatization, deregulation, destruction of labor unions, and belligerent and aggressive foreign policy. But ending abortion remains the perennial promise, one that is too often hijacked by partisan operatives who seek only to divide voters. Many Catholics are fed up with the divisive tactics and empty promises around this issue.
Senator Obama recognizes that abortion presents a profound moral challenge, tied in part to a loss of sense of sacredness of sex and lack of parental involvement. On the campaign trail he regularly calls on parents to turn off the television and has called on fathers to meet their family responsibilities. Regrettably, these clips are not included in your press releases.
Senator Obama has also reached out to Americans on both sides of this issue & embraces practical proposals designed to reduce the number of abortions in this country, including comprehensive health care and sex education, better health care, economic support for women, & promoting alternatives like adoption.
Like other American, we have watched as many candidates brought to office on a so-called pro-life platform insisted on policies that have left lives of millions more of our brothers and sisters at risk from war, uncontrolled pollution, deeper poverty, and a growing economic equality. Not this year.
This year there many Catholics – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents – who won’t let that happen again,
We are proud to be counted among Senator Obama’s Catholic advisors. Collectively our experience spans decades of scholarship and service working for and with the Catholic Church on a broad set of issues under the “consistent ethic of life.”
We were drawn into the campaign by Senator Obama’s vision for the common good, his profound message of hope, and his ability to unite citizens across class, race, and even party lines. We are excited about his promise as president, and we commend him to our fellow Catholics.
Mr. Donohue, you work to fight legitimate cases of anti-Catholic bigotry in this country and should be applauded. But when you smear other Catholics with whom you disagree, you betray your own cause .Our measure of what it means to be a “good” Catholic is not defined by the narrow pronouncements of partisan operative; but rather by the rich teachings of our Church and our informed consciences.”

Internet Pluses and Minus - Obama - 2

Internet Pluses and Minus – Obama – 2
cinops be gone Thursday, June 19, 2008

We continue with the purpose of trying to understand the mind and heart of those in the Catholic community who support the CINOP (Catholic-in-name-only politician). Are they Catholic? The established news media just loves, promotes, and protects any the Catholic-in-name-only politicians or organizations. The Washington Post allowed a blogger to attack William A. Donohue. So it was with Stevens-Arroyo who wrote “Catholic League Shenanigans” on May 16.

“Here is how he starts: “The Catholic League is not the ‘All Catholic League. It is not official Catholicism: still less does it speak for each and every one of the nation’s 60 million Catholics.”
That’s right, the Vatican is the “All Catholic” League and we never claimed to represent 60 million {we’re actually closer to 70 million, but never mind} Catholics.” But I hasten to add that the Catholic League is listed in the Official Catholic Directory and is not, therefore, some wayward organization that goes about willy nilly slapping the name Catholic on its masthead.
The next part is priceless. “As someone who once endeavored to work with the League, I was disappointed to learn it run out of a single office by a single ego. So while I find newsworthy the recent exchanges between the League’s president, Bill Donahue {sic} & evangelical pastor, John Hagee, they don’t amount to dogma.”
I asked out staff if anyone had ever heard of this guy, and no one had. So I take it that when he says he “endeavored” to work here, what he really means is he didn’t get an interview. Perhaps that’s because he can’t spell my name. In any event, it is true that we don’t have multiple offices, but it is not fair to say that our office has just one ego – there are ten others. All of whom can spell my name.
Steven-Arroyo questions why the Catholic League “waited until February of 2008 to become angered by Hagee’s career of bigotry over two decades.” He says it is because February was when Hagee endorsed McCain.
Now if he had bothered to read our website, he would have learned that I first wrote to Hagee in 1997. , Therefore, the answer he supplies to his own question implodes. But this is small potatoes compared to this gem: “The Catholic League demanded the dissolving of Obama’s Catholic support committee, accusing all of the members of disloyalty to the faith and labeling the actions of the Democratic Senator as “Hitlerian.”
In actual fact, I never made such an accusation. What I did was to report on the NARAL voting record of those members of Obama’s advisory group who were, or currently are, public office holders. And I never labeled “the actions” of Obama “Hitlerian” What I said is that Obama made a “Hitlerian decision” when he voted to allow a baby who survives an abortion to die without attending medicinal care. I stand by that accusation.
Stevens-Arroyo makes a desperate, and failed, attempt to equate abortion with “major Catholic teachings like forgiveness of Third World debt” and other related issues. But there is no Catholic teaching on this subject, nor is there a listing for it (unlike abortion) in the Catholic Catechism…. P. 3”

Obama Controversy - 1

OBAMA CONTROVERSY - 1
cinops be gone Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Preface:

Since May 2007 we have had more than 390 letters directly and indirectly dedicated to the exposure and removal of Catholic-in-name-only politicians from the U.S. political arena.

Thanks to William A. Donohue president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, Volume 35, Number 5 – June 2008, we have some information on Sen. Barack Obama’s Catholic National Advisory Council for your study and consideration. There are four pages.

“When Sen. Barack Obama recently announced the formation of his Catholic National Advisory Council, he said he was “deeply honored to have the support and counsel of these committed Catholic leaders, scholars and advocates.” We (Catholic League) quickly urged him “to dissolve it immediately.”

Of the 26 Catholic former or current public office holders listed as either National Co-Chairs (5), or as members of the National Leadership Committee (21), not one of them agrees with the Catholic Church on all three of the following public policy issues: abortion, embryonic stem cell research and school vouchers.

Indeed, on the issue of abortion, their record is disgraceful. Consider the scorecard as issued by the most radical pro-abortion organization in the nation – NARAL. Of the two national Co-Chairs who have a NARAL tally, one agrees with the extremist group 65% of the time and the other agrees 100 percent of the time. Of the 20 members on the National, Leadership Committee with a NARAL score, 17 earned a 100 percent rating. Of those who have less than a perfect score, not one is in favor of school vouchers.

“Practicing Catholics have every right to be insulted by Obama’s advisory group,” we said. We continued, “What is the purpose of having an advisory group about matters Catholic when most of its members reject the Catholic position.” Indeed, we said, “to choose Catholic dissidents to advise him about Catholic concerns is mind boggling.” P. 1

The Priesthood

The Priesthood
cinops be gone ----- Sunday, June 15, 2008
If you are a young man, a follower of Christ and still looking for a vocation, there is none higher than the priesthood. Check out the Dominicans. Pope Benedict XVI has written on the priestly vocation. As a cardinal he wrote a book, titled, Co-Workers of the Truth – Meditation for Every Day of the Year - Ignatius Press, San Francisco – 1992 What follows are excerpts from June 8,9,10,12 &14th.

“What exactly is ordination? “Are you prepared to unite yourself daily more closely with Christ, our High Priest, and to become with him a sacrificial offering for the glory of God and the salvation of mankind?” Although it is not expressly stated, the concept of the Eucharistic ministry as the center of the priest’s existence is at the root of this question…. The first and main requirement is that the priest make himself the servant of God who is greater than he is, that he learn to transcend himself and to offer the gift that no one can invent for himself and for which we are all waiting; for whether we know it or not, we all long to transcend the works of our own spirit, our hands, and to receive the festive gift. This last question: “Are you prepared … to become a sacrificial offering …?” means “Are you prepared to let yourself be drawn into the mystery and so to drink the festive wine of Jesus Christ, the wine of the Godhead…?”

In his autobiographical reflections, the French theologian Mar Oraison relates in a thought-provoking manner how he found his way from doctor to priest… For him becoming a priest did not mean bidding farewell to all he had hoped to accomplish as a doctor, but it was only in the priesthood that he saw the definitive and complete answer to death: the Resurrection. To make present Christ’s Resurrection and our own – that can be accomplished only through the power of the priestly ministry….

The great and always necessary role of the priest consists in this: that, in a world fragmented by specialization and therefore sick and suffering and disintegrated, the priest continues to be someone who is there for everyone, who holds humanity together from within…

He strengthens others in their faith, but he also always receives faith from them… Faith and prayer belong inseparably together. The time a priest spends in prayer and in hearing the word of God is never at the expense of his pastoral duties to the souls confided to his care. People can tell if the words and actions of their pastor have their origin in his prayer or only at his writing table.

The priestly ministry is a ministry of reconciliation… It is the priest’s role to make God’s gifts present to us and to associate us with these gifts in such a way that, as the Canon of Mass puts it, we ourselves become a gift together with him. It is he who is permitted to offer the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in which the things of this world become glorification of God and new life arises from this sacrifice. He is called not only to speak of God, but to speak with him for all of us and to open to us the highest of all possibilities of human speech – that our words become a conversation with the living God…”

Dear Raymond Arroyo and other Catholic Leaders

Dear Raymond Arroyo and other Catholic Leaders,
Cinops be gone – Flag Day - Saturday, June 14, 2008
When we talk about pro-choice Catholic politicians, we need to go deeper to their voting records in Congress. It is only fair to your listeners and readers that they be well informed. Abortion is only the tip of the iceberg.
Take for example, Senator Tom Harkin from Iowa. He voted against the Catholic Social Justice position on the following:
1. Funding of overseas pro-abortion organizations (109th)
2. Funding of embryonic-killing stem cell research (H.R. 810) (109th)
3. Child Custody Protection Act (S.403): passage (109th)
4. Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CINA) (109th)
5. Federal Marriage Amendment Act (109th)
6. Harkin Amendment to endorse Roe v. Wade (109th)
7. Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 passage (108th)
8. Abortion in military medical facilities (108th)
9. Feinstein Substitute Amendment (single-victim substitute) (108th)
10. Unborn Victims of Violence Act: passage (108th)

Also your listeners and readers should know that Senators Dick Durbin, Barbara Mikulski, Jack Reed, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray voted against the Catholic Social Justice position on all of the above issues?
Senators Chris Dodd, Rep. Susan Collins and Pat Leahy voted against the Catholic social justice position on nine of the above issues.
Senators Joe Biden, Edward Kennedy and John Kerry voted against the
Catholic social justice positions on seven and eight of the above issues.
(Thanks to Catholic Advocate for the above Scorecard of Catholics in Congress.)

I believe that Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput is going to write a book about pro-choice Catholic politicians receiving communion. Concerning proportionate reasons to vote for pro-choice politicians, the Archbishop has proposed this definition of proportionate: “What is a ‘proportionate’ reason when it comes to the abortion issue? he wrote in January 2008. “It’s the kind of reason we will be able to explain, with a clean heart, to the victims of abortion when we meet them face to face in the next life- which we most certainly will. If we’re confident that these victims will accept our motives as something more than an alibi, then we can proceed.”

I have a suggestion for all concerning the pro-choice politician in this life? It is a very simple solution. We do not vote for the CINOP (Catholic in name only politician). They are responsible for horrendous scandals.

Recently a “Spirituality in Higher Education” in-depth survey was conducted…
It revealed some startling and dangerous results.
71% of Catholic seniors believe same-sex couples should have legal right to marry, 57% of Catholic seniors believe abortion should be legal, 49% of Catholic seniors believe if two people really like each other, its OK to have sexual relations even if they’ve known each other a short period of time and are not married.

We are looking for public Catholic leadership. There isn’t any. We do missionary work among our own parishioners. Marriage is the Do or Die issue in this presidential election. Also, why vote for any member of a political party that has five absolute evils under its collar: Abortion on Demand, Assisted-Suicide, Euthanasia, Same-Marriage and Embryonic Stem Cell Research? Let’s stop being stupid Catholic voters in California!

Pray for the Congregation of the Society of Jesus

Pray for the Congregation of the Society of Jesus
cinops be gone Thursday, June 12, 2008
The Jesuits who saved the Catholic Church during the Reformation have shortchanged our American Roman Catholic Church today. (As a graduate of a Jesuit College in 1952, this is a very serious matter.) Let us read Father Richard John Neuhaus in the May 2008 – Number 183 of First Things – Public Square 75-6

“Published accounts and personal conversations about the recently concluded 35th General Congregation of the Society suggest that it will be pretty much business as usual with the Jesuits. The big news item was the election of new general of the society, Father Adolfo Nicilas, a Spaniard who has spent many years in Asia. {In today’s America, we need all the help in the world. GHK}

In two messages to the meeting of the congregation in Rome, Pope Benedict gently but clearly indicated concern about Jesuit fidelity to the Catholic faith and life, but that apparently made little impression.

Speaking to the press after his election, Father Nicolas complained about stories suggesting a tension between society and the papacy. “The Society of Jesus,” he said, “has from the very beginning always been in communion with Holy Father…. We want to cooperate with the Holy See and to obey the Holy Father. That has not changed and will not change.” Of course anyone who has not apostatized is in communion with the Holy Father.

In view of the recent history of the society, Father Nicolas’ assertion seems somewhat insouciant. As the number of members has declined precipitously in recent decades, Jesuits have been in the lead among those who dissent from, and in some cases publicly defy, the Church’s teaching on faith and morals. The fact that those who have presided over the society’s decline expressed such enthusiasm for the election of Father Nicolas is not encouraging.

The Catholic character of many Jesuits universities and colleges – describing themselves not as Catholic but as schools “in the Jesuit tradition” – has all but disappeared. Jesuit theologians are conspicuous among those denying or fudging the unique and universal role of Christ in human salvation.

A 2005 instruction from the Vatican declared that “those who practice homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies, or support the so-called ‘gay culture’ must not be admitted to seminaries or to holy orders.” Yet Jesuits in position of leadership declare that they welcome and affirm men who are “homosexual oriented and gay.”… There is also a deep dissent on abortion, as witness a chair in the law school, named in honor of the late Fr. Robert Drinan, who did more than anyone else to provide a covering rationale for Catholic politicians who publicly reject the Church’s teaching on the defense of innocent human life. … We must hope that he (Father Nicolas) will demonstrate the courage and faith to lead the society toward a “communion and faith to lead the society towards a “communion with the Holy Father” that would recognizable by St. Ignatius. …

After emphasizing the Church’s teaching on Jesus as the sole mediator of salvation, sexual morality, the culture of life, and the understanding of marriage and family, the pope said: “Precisely for this reason I have invited you in the past and I invite you again today to consider how to regain a fuller meaning of your distinctive ‘fourth vow’ of obedience to the Successor of Peter – which consists not solely in readiness to be sent on mission to distant lands, but also – in the more authentically Ignatian spirit of ‘thinking with the Church and in the Church’"

Calif. Earthquake Shakes Bedrock of Society by J.Boom, from www.ccgaction.org
“On May 15, 2008, the California Supreme Court changed the legal meaning of marriage. By a narrow margin of 4-3, the Court decreed that the State of California must allow same-sex couples to have the title and legal status of “marriage.”
This decision was not about practical benefits of marriage, such as health insurance, pensions or hospital visitations. Through domestic partnerships, homosexuals and bisexuals already have access to virtually all of the rights and responsibilities of marriage. Instead, the question was about one issue and one issue only: the meaning of marriage itself.

Every civilization and world religion has defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. This global practice reflects a basic fact of life: only a union between a man and a woman can provide a child with both a mother and a father. In fact, only a man and a woman can naturally make a child at all. And yet, in a stunning example of ideology trumping scientific fact and common sense, the Court ruled that taking account of gender differences in the formation of households is a form of bigotry. In fact, according to the four justices, giving special legal recognition to the union of woman and a man is similar to racism.

The Court ruled that giving same-sex couples the benefits of marriage through domestic partnerships, while keeping the name of marriage for unions of husbands and wives, is “separate but equal” discrimination, like Jim Crow segregation. Instead, the State of California must give marriage licenses to any combination of two adults, regardless of their gender. This forces the state to ignore the vital and unique benefits of the marital union of a man and a woman, such as providing children with both a father and a mother.

The judicial activism directly contradicts the democratic process. In 2000 the voters of California approved Proposition 22, which reinforced existing state law defining marriage as the union between a man and woman. This was not an isolated, one-act event, but part of the larger process of democracy. Many people are honestly trying to find the best solution to marriage controversies. They are compassionate to the problems of gays and lesbians, but they do not want to upend humanity’s oldest institution.

In 2003 the state legislature created domestic partnerships for same-sex couples. This legislation was a wrong policy, since it weakened the uniqueness of marriage as an institution, but it was an attempt to find a compromise solution. The state legislature has twice voted to overturn Proposition 22, but the governor vetoed this both times. Both the legislators and governor are elected officials.

Proponents of same-sex “marriage” could have tried to continue through the legislative process, or they could have brought out their own ballot measure. This is a messy process, but its democracy. Instead of allowing the people of California to work out a solution for themselves, these four justices imposed their revolutionary definition of marriage on the state. Even many proponents of same-sex “marriage” think making this drastic change without the organic development of popular consensus was wrong…. Supporters of a natural marriage culture have gathered enough signatures to put an initiative defining marriage as the union between a man and a woman on the November ballot…. Through education and working together, the genuine meaning of marriage must be restored."

Traditional marriage is the defining issue in this presidential campaign. One party is for it; the other party is for same-sex marriage. The Catholic-in-name-only politicians like Senators Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Claire McCaskill of Missouri must realize this. There is no neutrality. The same can be said for all Catholic-in-name only politicians in Orange County, California, U.S.A.

(Continued from yesterday) “This will have a huge impact on education. Suppose an elementary school teacher has students read stories about princes and princesses and knights and maidens. This can be considered discriminatory, because it promotes opposite sex unions without supporting same-sex ones. Textbooks and other materials in classrooms will have to be changed to give equal support to same-sex and traditional unions. Biology, social science and English lesson plans must all teach that all sexual preferences are equal.

Outside of the classroom, the messages and values of society will also change. The law serves as a moral compass for cultural values. If showing preferences for unions of men and women is bigotry in the eyes of the law. It will also become bigotry in the eyes of society. Showing male and female newlyweds strolling hand in hand along the shore of a beach in a TV or print ad is discriminatory, if we do not have similar images of “groom and groom” or “bride and bride.” Society will not longer have a clear image of man and woman together as a model.

This will have a great effect on people’s sense of identity and purpose. Our sense of the value of being male or female is intimately tied to the recognition that men and women contribute unique gifts to the formation of a family. But what happens when society teaches that two men are sufficient for raising a child? Then the message is that mothers are not necessary. Fatherhood and motherhood become accidental, because gender is not a relevant factor. But if there is nothing special about being a mother or a father, then what is special about being a woman or a man?

The debate over same-sex “marriage” is not just about a name or a label. We have something substantial at stake – the meaning of marriage and family, and our identities as men and women. If the California Supreme Court’s decision stands, then both California and the nation as a whole will face consequences we can only begin to imagine.

On the other hand, the ProtectMarriage.com initiative will be on the November 2008 ballot and will offer voters an opportunity to overrule California Supreme Court. It would amend the state constitution, and restore common sense and the will of the people expressed in 2000 with the passage of Defense Marriage Act (Prop 22), which then defined marriage as a union between a man and woman.

The stakes in the November election are monumental and the results will have consequences for every family in California and across the nation. The true meaning of marriage must be renewed.”

What we are dealing with is a darkness of error. We can free ourselves from this darkness by the light of truth and proclaim it. St. John asserts in his letter: God is light & whoever abides in God is in the light just a God himself is the light.
Catholics for the Common Good (www.ccgaction.org/family/stand with children) has provided us with some excellent articles on marriage that will help us in the missionary work of knocking on doors in the precincts of America.

Analysis: How California Court Undermined Marriage: It is a classic by J. Boom

When the vote of one justice on the California Supreme Court provided a majority that changed the legal meaning of marriage, the ruling immediately sparked a political controversy. However, this judicial decree goes far beyond politics. It strikes at the very heart of society. The basic building block of social life is the family.

Human beings are not manufactured on factory assembly lines. We come into existence through the physical union of a man and a woman. This union cannot stop at the physical level. When a man and woman are united at all levels – socially, emotionally, economically, and legally – then they are able to provide a child everything he or she needs for health.

Only the combination of a mother and father can provide a child with the full spectrum of emotional, moral, social and economic support. Because this union is so necessary for a child’s well being, it is a matter of social justice for a child to have a father and a mother. Every baby, every little boy and girl, and every adolescent needs parental care. To protect the rights and interests of the child, societies and religions have instituted marriage, which is the complete union of a man and a woman.

The Court’s decision, however, turns marriage inside-out. Instead of being an institution designed with children’s rights in mind, it is now an arrangement for the convenience of adults. An adult has a “right” to marry any other adult, regardless of how their arrangement will affect children. A man-man or woman-woman pairing are now legal equivalents of the pairing of a man and a woman. This means that society no longer has an institution that specifically encourages men and women to commit to each other in solid unions- even though such unions are the only way to provide children with both mothers and fathers.

The Court goes even further in preventing society from holding up unions of men and women as a norm. The four justices ruled that homosexuals constitute a “suspect class.” This means that sexual orientation has the same legal status as race or religion. Just as government cannot favor one race or religion over another, so also it cannot favor one sexual orientation over another.

In other words, the State of California cannot do anything to promote the special value of men and women committing to each other, because that would be discrimination against homosexuals. In the Court’s view, anyone who holds that there are unique reasons for unions of men and women is a bigot. This implicitly places churches and synagogues on the same level as the Ku Klux or white supremacists. (Cont’d tomorrow)

Fr. Frank Pavone and Priests for Life

Father Frank Pavone and Priests for Life
cinops be gone Sunday, June 08, 2008
It has been noted that most Catholics and most Catholic-in-name only politicians are not grounded in authentic Catholic faith. What group of missionaries comes to your mind that tries to educate them on the life issues and indirectly on the family and marriage issues? It is none other than the work of Father Frank Pavone and the Priests for Life. From the Desk of Fr. Frank Pavone:

“These next five months are extremely crucial for our nation’s unborn. The elections this November will go a long way in determining their future – including whether or not they will even have a future. For that reason, it’s critically important that every facet of Priests for Life’s “Faithful Citizenship” campaign be fully funded so that they can achieve their intended purpose, namely:

To WIN the fight to end abortion and preserve each and every American’s –both born and unborn – unalienable RIGHT TO LIFE.

To keep five of our most important “Faithful Citizenship” projects funded from now to the end of July. Here are the numbers:
1. Production costs for both EWTN and “Gospel of Life” TV shows: $75,000
2. Air time for “Line on the line” radio program” $190,000
3. Travel expenses for “parish visits”, “Two-by-Two” mission trips, speaking
engagements. TV/radio talk show appearances, etc: $380,000
4. Printing costs for all educational and resource materials: $365,000
5. Postage needed to send out all items noted in # 4: $204,000
This comes to $1,214,000 needed between now and July 31st.

None of this can happen unless you and every other member of our Priests for Life family make a personal commitment to help fund that work.

Over the next four years – from 2008 to 2012 – it is extremely likely that there will be at least one vacancy on the Court … quite possibly two … and perhaps as many as three. Well, it is the President of the United States and the U.S. Senate who together decide who will fill those vacancies.

Remember that the pro-abortion forces are licking their chops. NARAL and Planned Parenthood have announced they plan to spend 10 million dollars each to influence voters and counteract the kind of work organizations like us are doing. {Yes, that is a total of 20 Millions dollars against unborn and family values.}
We are poised in these coming month to undertake massive educational efforts which echo a theme we teach every year (whether it is an election year or not) all through the year, namely, that the first purpose of government is the protection of human rights, and that the first right is life. Therefore, voters have to elect pro-life candidates and block pro-abortion candidates.”

The Letter on AB 2747 Physician Assisted Suicide
cinops be gone Saturday, June 7, 2008
Thank you fellow Knights of Columbus member Ignacio Gomez who wrote the following letter in opposition to AB 2747. Ignacio is the pro-life chairman of the Pasadena Council 1174. This bill passed by one vote in the Assembly and will be going to the California State Senate. Please use it and add a postscript to it when mailing it to the California Senate Members where this bill will be debated.
This letter was mailed to Assemblymen Jose Solorio and copies to Juan Arambula, Felipe Fuentes, Alberto Torrico and Tony Mendoza. (For talking points and more info on the bill – www.ccgaction.org/life/pas/AB2747Update) (www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.htm)

Honorable Assemblyman Solorio: May 28, 2008

I am writing to urge you to vote against AB 2747, which proposes Physician Assisted Suicide. Our Nation was built upon moral laws. Our society has been misled by many sectors who believe that real freedom comes by doing what pleases us, without responsibility for the consequences of some our choices. At the same time many people in authority believe that our morals are defined by our own consciences, and not by God’s Commandments.

Our Western Civilization made great advances not made by other civilizations based on our society’s respect of three important principles, which we are presently trampling:

1)The 10 Commandments – God’s Law is being disregarded by those crying “freedom of conscience” which basically says, I can do what is convenient for me without regard to the consequences to our society, and ignoring what our society considers honorable.

2)The Philosophy of the Greeks, which is the love of Wisdom; it is being replace by ideology.

3)Roman Law, which is the separation of the Legislative, the Executive and Judicial branches of Government, is being abused by the Judicial Branch to declare unconstitutional laws passed by the Congress or State Assemblies.

Physician assisted suicide could lead to abuses by family members, or even by medical institutions wishing to be “more efficient” in dealing with patients who eventually would die. All of us will eventually die, so rushing it for the sake of sparing us the time, efforts, our emotions or even money in caring for those who are is not a good moral solution.

Patients suffering terminal illness must be given treatment, and if treatment will not cure the illnesses, and then the patients must be given palliatives to alleviate their remaining time in suffering. Being by the side of family members who are dying helps us to appreciate what good they may have done for us during their lives, and it serves as an example to our children that sometimes we must suffer for the sake of others, especially those close to us whom we love.

Our society has much confusion with a variety of values, and in order to better educate our children, we must show them that our laws reflect our values, which at times include suffering and pain. I therefore ask that, for the good of our families, our State of California and our country that you vote against AB 2747, allowing Physician Assisted Suicide.
Respectfully yours,
Ignacio Gomez

The Messages of Pope Benedict XVI - 4 of 4

The Messages of Pope Benedict XVI – 4 of 4
cinops be gone Thursday, June 05, 2008
Again, thank you Miles Christi’s Report No. 91 May 2008 titled “Viva il Papa!” An Historic Visit full of hope and challenges for us all: www.mileschriti.org
Thank you Fr. Patrick Wainwright, MC, Apostolate Director:

14. Freedom is not Relativism: “Freedom is a delicate value. It can be understood or misused so as to lead not to the happiness which we all expect it to yield … He you noticed how often the call for freedom is made without ever referring to the truth of the human person? Some today argue that respect for freedom of the individual makes it wrong to seek truth, including the truth about what is good. In some circles to speak of truth is seen as controversial or divisive, and consequently best kept in the private sphere. And in truth’s place – or better said in its absence – an idea has spread which, in giving value to everything indiscriminately, claim to assure freedom and to liberate conscience. This we call relativism. But what purpose has a ‘freedom’ which, in disregarding truth, pursues what is false or wrong?” (Address to Young People)

15. Truth is Christ: “How many people have been offered a hand which in the name of freedom or experience has led them to addiction, to moral and intellectual confusion, to hurt, to a loss of self-respect, even to despair and so tragically and sadly to the taking of their own life? Dear friends, truth is not an imposition. Nor is it simply a set of rules. It is a discovery of the One who never fails us; the One whom we can always trust. In seeking truth we come to live by belief because ultimately truth is a person: Jesus Christ. That is why authentic freedom is not an opting out. It is an opting in” (Ibid.).

16, Pope’s Bottom Line Message to us: “And this, dear friends, is the particular challenge which the Successor of Saint Peter sets before you today. As ‘a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation”, follow faithfully in the footsteps of those who have gone before you! Hasten the coming of God’s Kingdom in this land! Pat generations have left you can impressive legacy” (Homily at the Mass in Yankee Stadium, NYC).

Thank you, Holy Father, for your visit!!

9. Sound Understanding of “Freedom:” (Cont’d from Miles Christi- May 2008)
“In a society that rightly values personal liberty, the Church needs to promote at every level of her teaching – in catechesis, preaching, seminary and university instruction – an apologetics aimed at affirming the truth of Christian revelation, the harmony of faith and reason, and a sound understanding of freedom, seen in positive terms as a liberation both from the limitation of sin and for an authentic and fulfilling life. In a word, the Gospel has to be preached and taught as an integral way of life, offering an attractive and true answer, intellectually and practically, to real human problems. The ‘dictatorship of relativism’, in the end, is nothing less than a threat to genuine freedom, which only matures in generosity and fidelity to the truth” (Address to the Bishops)

10. On Academic Freedom:
In regard to faculty members at Catholic colleges, universities, I wish to reaffirm the great value of academic freedom. In virtue of this freedom you are called to search for the truth wherever careful analysis leads you. Yet it is also the case that any appeal to the principle of academic freedom in order to justify positions that contradict the faith and the teaching of the Church would obstruct or even betray the university’s identity and mission; a mission at the heart of the Church’s munus docendi {office of Teaching} and not somehow autonomous or independent of it” (Address to Catholic Educators).

11. Hunger For God. “The spires of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral are dwarfed by the skyscrapers of the Manhattan skyline, yet in the heart of this busy metropolis, they are vivid reminder of the constant yearning of the human spirit to rise to God” (Address to Priests and Religious in NYC St. Patrick’s Cathedral).

12. Building Up a Catholic Culture: “The fidelity and courage which the Church in this country will respond to the challenges raised by an increasingly secular and materialistic culture will depend in large part upon your own fidelity in handing on the treasure of our Catholic faith… The challenges confronting us require a comprehensive and sound instruction in the truths of the faith. But they also call for cultivating a mindset, an intellectual ‘culture”, which is genuinely Catholic, confident in the profound harmony of faith and reason, and prepared to bring the richness of faith’s vision to bear on the urgent issues which affect the future of American society” (Homily at the Mass in the Washington Nationals Stadium, DC).

13. An Appeal For a Renewed Missionary Zeal.
“I pray, then, that this is significant anniversary in the life of the Church in the United States, and the presence of the Successor of Peter in your midst, will be an occasion for all Catholics to reaffirm their unity in the apostolic faith, to offer their contemporaries a convincing account of the hope which inspires them, and to be renewed in missionary zeal for the extension of God’s Kingdom. The world needs this witness! Who can deny that the present moment is a crossroads, not only for the Church in America but also for society and vital movements, in the enthusiasm for the faith shown by so many young people, in the number of those who each year embrace the Catholic faith, and in a greater interest in prayer and catechesis” (ibid.).

We are saturated even today after the end of the cold war with these intellectual misfits and barbarians not only on our educational campus but also in the media.

What follows is an accurate news story of what is happening in Great Britain and will definitely happen in the U.S.A. if we don’t have a personal religious revival and foolishly elect what John Paul II called the Culture of Death advocates which include the Catholic-in-name-only politicians. The following is a classic.

Anglican Bishop: Vacuum Created by Christian Culture Collapse Will be Filled by Radical Islam: Says in the 1960s Church leaders “all but capitulated” to rise of new-Marxism: by Hilaire White.” Rochester, UK, June 2, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com)

“The beliefs, values and virtues of Great Britain have been formed by the Christian faith” and the loss of that faith in public life has resulted not only is social breakdown, but the creation of a moral and cultural vacuum that is being filled by violent radical Islamism says a senior Anglican prelate.

In an article in a new political magazine Standpoint , the Rt. Rev. Dr. Michael Nazir-the Anglican bishop of Rochester, pinpointed the “social and sexual revolution” of the 1960’s orchestrated by Marxist academics, as the source of the sudden collapse of Christian values. The “endless self-indulgence” of the “new Britain” has resulted in skyrocketing rates of drunkenness, drug abuse, street violence, family breakdown. He added that solutions offered – talk of “respect, tolerance and good behavior” popular with Britain’s politicians – are “hardly adequate for the task before us.”

“It is this situation that has created the moral and spiritual vacuum in which we now find ourselves. While the Christian consensus was dissolved, nothing else, except perhaps endless self-indulgence, was put in its place,” he wrote.

Britain’s social values such as the dignity of human life, equality before the law and freedom are developments of Christian values, the Pakistan-born Nazir-Ali said, and without their Christian foundation, will break down in favor of new belief systems based on different values. “Radical Islamism, for example, will emphasize solidarity of the umma {worldwide community of the Muslim faithful against the freedom of the individual. Instead of the Christian virtues of humility, service of humility, service and sacrifice, there may be honor, piety and the importance of ‘saving face.’

The bishop wrote that Britain’s historical reality is that it was Christianity that unified a “rabble of mutually hostile tribes, fiefdoms and kingdoms” into a nation conscious of its identity and strong enough to form a global empire. Dr. Nazir-Ali credited the rise of neo-Marxism among academics in the 1960s who orchestrated the ‘social and sexual revolution” to which Church leaders “all but capitulated.”

In this revolution, genuine Christian values of openness have been replaced by the “newfangled and insecurely founded” doctrine of multiculturalism. This has resulted in a Britain made up of segregated communities and parallel lives” with little social foundation to unify and give it identity. Bishop Nazir-Ali’s article closely followed comments he made last week that Britain’s Christians were failing in their duty to Muslims in refusing to attempt to convert them to Christianity, a suggestion that was greeted with howls of outrage from his fellow Anglican officials who insisted who insisted that they “show no sensitivity to the need for good interfaith relations.” …

“Most of our homegrown prelates are more interested in homosexuality or in spreading doubt about the gospel or urging the adoption of Sharia law.” I am sometimes tempted to wonder if the same organization targeted both political parties (especially the Unconservatives), the Church of England, the BBC, Civil Service … and universities.” …

4. The Centrality of the Family: Cont’d from www.mileschristi.org - May - 2008
“The family is also the primary place for evangelization, for passing on the faith, for helping young people to appreciate the importance of religious practice and Sunday observance. How can we not be dismayed as we observe the sharp decline of the family as a basic element of Church and society? Divorce and infidelity have increased, and many young men and women are choosing to postpone marriage or to forego it altogether. To some young Catholics, the sacramental bond of marriage seems scarcely distinguishable from a civil bond, or even a purely informal and open-ended arrangement to live with another person.” (Address to the Bishops).

5. Marriage, Indissoluble Commitment:
“Hence we have an alarming decrease in the number of Catholic marriages in the United States together with an increase in cohabitation, in which the Christ-like mutual self-giving of spouses, sealed by a public promise to live out the demands of an indissoluble lifelong commitment, is simply absent. In such circumstances, children are denied the secure environment that they need in order to flourish as human beings, and society is denied the stable building blocks which it requires.”

6. Against Homosexual Unions and Contraception:
“It is your task to proclaim boldly the arguments from faith and reason in favor of the Institution of marriage, understood as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, open to the transmission of life. This message should resonate with people today, because it is essentially an unconditional and unreserved ‘yes’ to life, a ‘yes’ to love” (ibid.).

7. About Pornography and Immorality:
“What does it mean to speak of child protection when pornography and violence can be viewed in so many homes through media widely available today? We need to reassess urgently the values underpinning society, so that a sound moral formation can be offered to young people and adults alike. All have a part to play in this task… It falls to you, as pastors modeled upon Christ, the Good Shepherd, to proclaim this message loud and clear, and thus to address the sin of abuse within the wider context of sexual mores {good moral customs}” (Ibid.).

8. On Relativism:
“America’s brand of secularism poses a particular problem: it allows for professing belief in God, and respects the public role of religion and the Churches, but at the same time it can subtly reduce religious belief to a lowest common denominator. Faith becomes a passive acceptance that certain things ‘out there’ are true, but without practical relevance for everyday life. The result is a growing separation of faith from life: living ‘as if God did not exist’. This is aggravated by an individualistic and eclectic approach to faith and religion: far from a Catholic approach to ‘thinking with the Church’, each person believes he or she has a right to pick and choose, maintaining external social bonds but without an integral, interior conversion to the law of Christ. Consequently, rather than being transformed and renewed in mind. Christians are easily tempted to conform themselves to the spirit of this age. We have seen this emerge in an acute way in the scandal given by Catholics who promote an alleged right to abortion” (Ibid.).

Thank you Miles Christi’s Report No. 91 May 2008 titled “Viva il Papa!!” An Apostolic Visit full of hope, and challenges for us all: www.mileschristi.org

1. The Illusion of Materialism: “For an affluent society, a further obstacle to an encounter with the living God lies in the subtle influence of materialism … People today need to be reminded of the ultimate purpose of their lives. The need to recognize that implanted] within them is a deep thirst for God. They need to be given opportunities to drink from the wells of His infinite love. It is easy to be entranced by the almost unlimited possibilities that science and technology place before us; it is easy to make the mistake of thinking we can make the mistake of thinking we can obtain by our own efforts the fulfillment of our deepest needs. This is an illusion. Without God, who alone bestows upon us what we by ourselves cannot attain our lives are ultimately empty. People need to be constantly reminded to cultivate a relationship with Him … The goal of all our pastoral and catechetical work, the object of our preaching, and the focus of our sacramental ministry should be to help people establish and nurture that living relationship with ‘ Christ Jesus, our hope” (1 Tim 1: 1” (Address to the Bishops).

2. Secularism: Religion as a Mere Private Matter:
“While it is true that this country is marked by a genuinely religious spirit, the subtle influence of secularism can nevertheless color the way people allow their faith to influence their behavior. Is it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday, and then during the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary to those beliefs? Is it consistent for practicing Catholics to ignore or exploit the poor and the marginalized, to promote sexual behavior contrary to Catholic moral teaching, or to adopt positions that contradict the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death? Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted. Only when their faith permeates every aspect of their lives do Christians become truly open to the transforming power of the Gospel.” (Ibid.).

3. Participation in the Public Square
“Clearly, the Church’s influence on public debate takes place on many different levels. In the United States, as elsewhere, there is much current and proposed legislation that gives cause for concern from the point of view of morality, and the Catholic community, under your guidance, needs to offer a clear and united witness on such matters. Even more important, though, is the gradual opening of the minds and hearts of the minds and hearts of the wider community to moral truth. Here much remains to be done. Crucial in this regard is the role of the lay faithful to act as a ‘leaven’ in society. Yet it cannot be assumed that all Catholic citizens think in harmony with the Church’s teaching on today’s key ethical questions. Once again, if falls to you to ensure that the moral formation provided at every level of ecclesial life reflects the authentic teaching of the Gospel of life.” (Ibid.).

“The writings on the wall (Mene, Tekel, and Parsin) was a message for all those who defy God. Although Belshazzar had power and wealth, his kingdom was totally corrupt, and he could not withstand the judgment of God. God’s time of judgment comes for all people. … turn away from your sin now before God denies you more opportunities to repent. Ask God to forgive you and begin to live by his standard of justice.” P. 225 The Best of the Bible, 1996, Tyndale House P.
