Thank you fellow Knights of Columbus member Ignacio Gomez who wrote the following letter in opposition to AB 2747. Ignacio is the pro-life chairman of the Pasadena Council 1174. This bill passed by one vote in the Assembly and will be going to the California State Senate. Please use it and add a postscript to it when mailing it to the California Senate Members where this bill will be debated.
This letter was mailed to Assemblymen Jose Solorio and copies to Juan Arambula, Felipe Fuentes, Alberto Torrico and Tony Mendoza. (For talking points and more info on the bill – www.ccgaction.org/life/pas/AB2747Update) (www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.htm)

Honorable Assemblyman Solorio: May 28, 2008

I am writing to urge you to vote against AB 2747, which proposes Physician Assisted Suicide. Our Nation was built upon moral laws. Our society has been misled by many sectors who believe that real freedom comes by doing what pleases us, without responsibility for the consequences of some our choices. At the same time many people in authority believe that our morals are defined by our own consciences, and not by God’s Commandments.

Our Western Civilization made great advances not made by other civilizations based on our society’s respect of three important principles, which we are presently trampling:

1)The 10 Commandments – God’s Law is being disregarded by those crying “freedom of conscience” which basically says, I can do what is convenient for me without regard to the consequences to our society, and ignoring what our society considers honorable.

2)The Philosophy of the Greeks, which is the love of Wisdom; it is being replace by ideology.

3)Roman Law, which is the separation of the Legislative, the Executive and Judicial branches of Government, is being abused by the Judicial Branch to declare unconstitutional laws passed by the Congress or State Assemblies.

Physician assisted suicide could lead to abuses by family members, or even by medical institutions wishing to be “more efficient” in dealing with patients who eventually would die. All of us will eventually die, so rushing it for the sake of sparing us the time, efforts, our emotions or even money in caring for those who are is not a good moral solution.

Patients suffering terminal illness must be given treatment, and if treatment will not cure the illnesses, and then the patients must be given palliatives to alleviate their remaining time in suffering. Being by the side of family members who are dying helps us to appreciate what good they may have done for us during their lives, and it serves as an example to our children that sometimes we must suffer for the sake of others, especially those close to us whom we love.

Our society has much confusion with a variety of values, and in order to better educate our children, we must show them that our laws reflect our values, which at times include suffering and pain. I therefore ask that, for the good of our families, our State of California and our country that you vote against AB 2747, allowing Physician Assisted Suicide.
Respectfully yours,
Ignacio Gomez
