Editorials – The Traditionalist – summer 2009

Exhibit A in “The Case of the Indifferent Ordinary” is the Notre-Dame Scandal, wherein our President was honored by America’s leading Catholic institution and about half our bishops wrote letters to ND’s president.
This was deemed “tough.”

The truth: Almost 50 years after the Church adopted a new governing style under Pope Paul VI (see our inaugural issue for details) and after 28 years of another pontiff’s flood of documents and position papers with no follow-up, our shepherds do not use their authority. The “tough” ones use suasion.
The other prelates use, well, nothing at all.

The Church’s response to the ND-Obama scandal will have little to no effect on the behavior of leading Catholic educators.

The Rahm Emmanuels of the world laugh at bishops who write letters. Unless and until penalties are meted out to Catholic politicians and educators for their behavior, most of the faithful will shrug the Notre Dame episode off and the press and Hollywood will continue their assaults on Christian life. Which further erode Catholic morale, in an endless diabolical spiral?
Time for some true bishops, not Wuerls.

HEALTHY SECULARISM?
Noted Pat Buchanan in a recent column: “The social, moral and cultural revolution of the 1960s… has captured the culture, and converted many of the young. Among Americans 18 to 29, a fourth professed to be atheist, agnostic, or of no religious faith. The figure is surely higher among the college young.”

Buchanan points to judicial fiat as playing the pivotal role in “the triumph of secularism.”

Adds Buchanan: “Since the Everson decision of 1947, justices have expunged Christianity and all its books and symbols from the public square and public schools. Voluntary prayer, the Ten Commandments, Bible reading, Christmas plays and carols, Nativity scenes, Easter vacation, before-game prayers, benedictions at graduations – all have been ordered terminated by unelected judges, against the will of the majority. Abortion on demand, too, was imposed by judicial fiat.”

He noted that the homosexual movement, tiny in its numbers but supported by key American courts, has thus far triumphed over huge majorities who voted against homosexual “marriage” in 16 states.”

Buchanan: “Secularism has become the established religion of the American state and judges are the high priests of the new order.”

Why is this America an exemplar of “healthy secularism,” unless that phrase, employed by the Holy Father on his 2008 trip to the U.S., simply means that we have not yet become as decadent as Europe?

Why? One of America’s low politicians, the pro-abortion and pro-homosexual Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, took his road show to the Vatican on April 22. He could not have done it without the help of one of America’s bishops, Michael Sheehan.

Richardson got himself prominently displayed in L’Observatore Romano, Reason? The two of them worked hard in glove to spare the lives of some of America’s most destructive citizens – convicted murderers on death row…
