The Notre Dame Scandal - 7

The Notre Dame Scandal – 7

The Price of Liberty is eternal vigilance!
The Integrity of our Catholic Faith is faithful vigilance to the Catholic Church’s Catechism.

It would be a good idea for both sides of the controversy to contemplate the message of the Holy Father for May 3, 2009, Fourth Sunday of Easter – His Theme: Faith in the divine initiative – the human response.

It expands upon the theme of the Good Shepherd who does not run away (or is silent) when the sheep are to be devoured, but rather lays down his own life for them.

This is the seventh in a series of letters on the Notre Dame Scandal. Let us focus on the shepherds who are the bishops. Today, we need shepherds in the footsteps of Pope John Paul II. About 70 bishops have spoken out. We look forward to all to speak out between today and Saturday, May 17th. That is the day of the President’s commencement address.

Fact # 1 – When Father John Jenkins made the decision to invite President Obama; not one of his 12 advisors questioned it. This is a most disturbing mindset and may be characteristic of other Catholic universities. One can understand why Bishop John D’Arcy was not informed. In the spring of 2004 as reported by the Cardinal Newman Society, the bishop scolded Notre Dame for “Monologues.”

The following are excerpts from his statement concerning the Feb. 14th 2004 performance of “The Vagina Monologues” at the University of Notre Dame.

“At this time of the year, it has been customary for many institutions of higher learning, including, regrettably, Catholic institutions, to present something called, “The Vagina Monologues” is presenting it again, as it has for the past several years, under the official sponsorship of at least two departments.

“The Vagina Monologues” is offensive to women; it is antithetical of Catholic teaching on the beautiful gift of human sexuality and also to the teachings of the Church on the human body and the human person, in the tradition of the church, must never be seen as an object…. This play violates the truth about women; the truth about sexuality; the truth about male and female, and the truth about the human body”…

For the above, thank you Cardinal Newman Society. The Society is dedicated to promoting the educational ideal espoused by John Henry Newman and further developed by Pope John Paul II in his Apostolic Constitution, Ex Corde Ecclesiae. To accelerate progress towards our goal of renewing Catholic identity in Catholic Higher Education in the U.S.A., the Cardinal Newman Society needs to expose thousands more college leaders, educators, alumni and students and their parents and grandparents. There is strength in numbers; and please make a small or large contribution:
