Questions of Report # 6, David Carlin's Book # 2

Questions on "Can a Catholic Be a Democrat?"

Question # 2 "It is my understanding that we are not to judge, but to love. (I think it was St. Francis of Assisi (I may be wrong, but it speaks of his spirituality) gave us a very profound method to evangelize our faith, 'Preach the Gospel Daily, when necessary, use words.'"

It has been said that a short but fervent prayer will usually do more to bring about a conversion than long discussions of fine speeches. It may take a few more Mondays to answer your question. Let's start with excerpts of a pro-life message I put into the Knights of Columbus monthly bulletin for Oct. 2003. (Sept. 14, 2003) We will continue next Monday.

Shake the Dust from Your Feet
I have listened to Father Shannon Collins’ homily more than a dozen times. Where do I start?
Father Collins wants our role model to be St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis spent hours in prayer. The Lord answered. “Go forth Francis and rebuild my church for it is falling down.” He headed to Rome and founded the Franciscan order. Pope Innocent III saw in Francis a true and loving reformer. The Church was in trouble like it is today. Pope John Paul II seeks like minded reformers. Archbishop Sean P. O’Malley, a Capuchian Franciscan of Boston is one of them.

“This idea of entering into a dialogue with the world has not worked.
(Gaudium et Spes) What can Christ and His Mystical Body learn from the world? We have the fullness of grace. The Council Fathers failed to read the signs of the times in the 60’s and 70’s. We were unprepared. The pagan dust has clouded our vision. We were poor instruments of the Holy Ghost.

“It was to be a new Pentecost and a new Spring Time. Cardinal Wright said, “There is no spring time of Faith, there is a winter of unbelief.” The world is not looking for Common Ground with the Church. It is looking to take ground from the Church and it has succeeded. We are breathing in the pagan dust. There exists liturgical abuses and the papal authority is disdained and ridiculed. Today is like the times of St. Francis.

“The idea of dialoging with dissenters is questionable. Many of them hate Holy Mother Church. There is devastation in the vineyard. In 1965, we had 50,000 seminarians. Today there are 4700. The ordination of priests was 1600; today there are 450. We had 3 out of 4 attend Mass on Sundays. Today, it is one out of four. The renewal has not been a success. Let us stop this compulsory optimism and having a good face. We are living in a culture of death which is determined to destroy our beliefs and our country. We are in a cultural war.”

Father Collins has a quotation from G.K. Chesterton. “Do you know what is wrong with the Church? I AM. I am what is wrong with the Church.” We can start with the little things. There is a Life Chain coming up in several areas of Orange County. Ours is on Oct. 5th, 2003, Respect Life Sunday, at the corner of Beach Blvd. and Garden Grove Blvd., from 2:30 – 3:30 P.M. Also we have the Recall Election on Tues. Oct. 7th. We can vote for a pro-life governor. We are in the Year of the Rosary for private prayers at home, and in Church for church unity and public prayers at the abortion sites.

The time has come to tell it like it is. The spirit of the world cannot accept truth. Political correctness prostitutes the meaning of words. Marriage is one example. Same-sex marriage is fruitless and sterile. That is what the culture of death is. It is time to confront the world, proclaim the gospel and conquer men and women for Christ. The Word of God has infinite power. Repent and believe in the Gospel and be converted.
“Now go forth and rebuild my Church for it is falling down.”
Fraternally yours,
