Prostituting Catholic Identity in the Public Sector - Part 1

Prostituting Catholic Identity in the Public Sector – Part 1

Within their religion, the Mormons, the Evangelicals and Baptists would not put up with this. Why should Catholics?* let’s check out the Editorial and the letters to the editor of “The Catholic World Report” – Oct. 2011.

Writing for the Huffington Post, author Julian Guthrie wonders “how progressive Democrats remain Catholic.” The answer is, she concludes, that they define Catholicism on their own terms:

“… When I look at prominent Catholic politicians with liberal social agendas and wonder how they attend Mass on Sunday and legislate something very different on Monday, I have my answer. Catholicism, a club with magisterial rituals, good deeds, arcane teachings, and more than one billion adherents, is far from monolithic.

“The house rules that apply are those set by believers themselves. These are the everyday Catholics who may honor their pope but disagree with papal positions, and who hold their faith close but have disdain for much of the dogma. The Catholics who fill the nation’s pews share something with the politicians at the podium: they believe that resistance and reverence can go together like bread and wine.

The Legacy of Cuomo Catholicism: Here are 3 letters to the editor:

The title of your August/September editorial, “Destruction from Within,” was more prophetic than you probably realized. Our problems are indeed from within and unfortunately many have their seeds in an incompetent hierarchy. Public scandal is a sin and the failure of the American hierarchy to call out so-called Catholic politicians for their anti-Catholic policies is a disservice to us all, and a harbinger of the disaster to come for our Church. Robert H. Kammer, Rockville, Maryland

“The Legacy of Cuomo Catholicism” would be better stated as, “The Legacy of Weak-Bishop Catholicism.” When the bishops sat on the sideline and let John F. Kennedy and other Democrats thumb their noses at the Church, as they do to this day, that was when the “Destruction from Within” began. Bob McKissick, Wausau, Wisconsin

The Church has always had her theological prostitutes. What is astounding today is that so many of them – lay and ordained alike – are proud to ply their trade in public. It is bad enough that politicians like the Cuomos and Pelosi act as if they are theologians and preach their partisan preferences in the guise of Church teaching. What’s worse is that the Church tolerates her bishops giving Holy Communion to Nancy Pelosi and Andrew Cuomo and his live-in girl friend as if public scandal, promotion of abortion, and the creation of “gay marriage” are quite all right with the Catholic Church.

Perhaps the Church distinguishes between the serious wrong but “serious” theologians like Charles Curran (who ultimately get the boot) and the seriously wrong but unserious, merely partisan politicians who preach the gospel according to the Democratic Party... Dan Sullivan, Arlington, Virginia.
